Marshmallow root mucilage hydrates into a viscous layer over the pharyngeal surface, which is a physical effect and not a pharmacological one. Malabar nut acts on secretion character rather than surface coating, so the two operate by different routes. Syrups often carry both for that reason. The pairing is formulation convention.

Malabar nut leaf preparations carry polyphenols and tannins that bind non-heme iron in the gut lumen into poorly absorbed complexes. This is the same chemistry that makes strong tea lower iron uptake from a meal. Separating the two by two or three hours removes most of the overlap. The effect is on absorption, not on iron stores directly.
Ascorbate reduces ferric iron to the ferrous form and keeps it soluble, which partly offsets tannin binding when a polyphenol-rich herb is taken with an iron source. The offset is partial and depends on how much polyphenol is present. This is a well characterised luminal interaction rather than an effect of Malabar nut itself.
Turmeric appears alongside Malabar nut in many multi-herb respiratory blends. Curcuminoids are poorly absorbed on their own and act largely at the gut wall unless a solubilising system is used.
