Both contribute lipophilic terpenoid volatile oils. The pairing rests on traditional use and shared chemistry, not on trial data for the combination.
Licorice appears in a large share of traditional decoctions containing the tuber, where it moderates bitterness and acts as the conventional harmoniser. Glycyrrhizin is also a mild surfactant, which may help disperse lipophilic constituents in an aqueous decoction. The pairing is formulation convention with a plausible physical basis.

Cyperene, alpha-cyperone and cyperotundone are volatile sesquiterpenes with very low water solubility. A water decoction extracts only a fraction of them, while a lipid vehicle or an oil-filled capsule carries far more. This is solubility chemistry, and it explains why essential oil and decoction preparations behave differently.
Piperine raises systemic exposure to many co-administered lipophilic compounds by slowing their metabolism, which is why it is added to terpenoid and polyphenol products. The same mechanism raises exposure to constituents whose dose-response is not characterised. Read it as a change in exposure, not automatically an improvement.
Terpenoid essential oils relax intestinal smooth muscle in laboratory tissue preparations, and combining two of them adds to that load. Peppermint oil has far more human data behind it than the tuber does. Anyone using both should count the total volatile oil intake and expect reflux as the common limiting effect.
Curcuminoids and sesquiterpenes share the same formulation problem and the same solutions: lipid carriers, emulsification or particle size reduction. They are also traditional co-ingredients in Ayurvedic digestive preparations. The shared point is delivery, not a demonstrated combined effect.
Chamomile contributes bisabolol and chamazulene, the tuber contributes cyperene-type sesquiterpenes, and both classes show smooth muscle and central effects in laboratory models. The tubers build up an oil dominated by several related aromatic compounds. These are very fat-soluble, so water-based teas pull out only a small fraction of them while oil-based or alcohol-water preparations extract much more.
One of these compounds is detectable by smell at extremely tiny amounts, which is why the tuber has a distinctive peppery, woody scent even when the total oil content is low.
The tuber is mainly a starch-storage organ, so most of a dried tuber powder's weight is starch and fiber. The oil and flavonoid content is a minor fraction, which is why extract concentration matters more here than for a leaf material.
The volatile oil compounds are lost gradually during hot-air drying and long storage of milled material. A whole dried tuber holds onto the oil better than powder that's already been milled, because milling breaks open the oil-bearing cells.
