Oolong leaf carries both caffeine and theanine, and theanine blunts some of the jittery edge of caffeine while the alertness effect remains. Theanine crosses the blood brain barrier and raises alpha band activity, which is why the pair reads calmer than caffeine alone. Adding isolated theanine to an oolong habit shifts the ratio in that direction. This is a subjective quality effect, not a performance outcome.
Caffeine from any source blocks adenosine receptors, and the caffeine in oolong is chemically identical to the caffeine in a capsule. Stacking a pre workout or coffee on top of several cups adds up in a way people underestimate. The relevant number is total daily caffeine, not the number of sources. Sensitive people feel this as restlessness and shorter sleep.
Tea polyphenols and galloylated catechins bind non heme iron in the gut lumen and form complexes that are poorly absorbed. Oolong sits between green and black tea in oxidation, so it carries both catechins and polymerised polyphenols, and both classes bind iron. Anyone building iron status should separate the tea from the iron dose by a couple of hours. Heme iron from meat is far less affected.
Ascorbate keeps iron in the ferrous state and partly overcomes the binding effect of tea polyphenols on non heme iron. It also slows the oxidative degradation of catechins in solution, which is why lemon in tea is more than a flavour habit. The offset is partial, so timing still matters when iron status is the goal. Read this as a mitigation of a known interference rather than a boost.
Catechins are heavily glucuronidated in the gut wall and liver, which is the main reason plasma levels stay low. Piperine inhibits several of those conjugating enzymes and raises catechin exposure in animal work. Human confirmation for oolong specifically is thin. The same inhibition also raises exposure to other things taken at the same time, which cuts both ways.
Milk proteins bind tea polyphenols through hydrogen bonding and hydrophobic contact, which softens astringency and reduces the free polyphenol fraction measured in the cup. Whether this changes what reaches the bloodstream is still argued, with studies pointing both ways. If the point of the tea is polyphenol intake, drinking it without milk removes the question. If the point is enjoyment, this is not worth worrying about.
Oolong and green tea extract both come from Camellia sinensis and share catechins and caffeine, so combining them stacks the same compounds rather than adding new ones. Concentrated EGCG extracts have their own liver related cautions at high doses that brewed tea does not carry. Counting total catechin and caffeine load across both is the sensible move. There is no additional mechanism gained by using both.
Most tea polyphenols are not absorbed in the small intestine and arrive in the colon, where bacteria cleave them into smaller phenolic acids. Fermentable fibre shifts the microbial community that performs that conversion, so the pairing is mechanistically coherent. Rodent work with oolong polyphenols reports microbiota shifts alongside behavioural changes. That is animal data on a mechanism, not a human outcome.
Tannins and polymerised polyphenols bind divalent minerals in the gut, and zinc is affected alongside iron although less dramatically. Taking a zinc supplement with a strong brew is a small unnecessary loss. Separating them by an hour or two removes the issue. Dietary zinc from a mixed meal is less vulnerable than an isolated dose.
