Pulsatilla + Gan CaoLicorice is the conventional harmoniser in the decoction family that contains Pulsatilla.

Bai tou weng tang and its modified versions pair Pulsatilla chinensis with harmonising and moderating herbs, licorice among them. Beyond formula theory, glycyrrhizin is a surfactant that helps disperse the triterpenoid saponins that define Pulsatilla, and licorice mucilage buffers the mucosal irritancy those saponins carry. That buffering role is the practical reason the pairing persists. Extended licorice intake raises blood pressure, which caps the duration.

Pulsatilla + BerberineCoptis, a berberine source, is a component of the classical Pulsatilla decoction.

The classical formula built around bai tou weng includes Coptis and Phellodendron, both berberine-bearing, so the combination is centuries old rather than a modern invention. A modified Pulsatilla decoction was reported to reduce intestinal mucosal damage in an animal model, with the authors attributing part of the effect to microbiota changes. Animal data grounds a mechanism, not a human effect. Berberine also has real interaction potential through CYP inhibition, which the traditional context does not address.

Multi-omics work on Pulsatilla chinensis and on modified Pulsatilla decoction attributes part of the observed effect to shifts in gut microbial communities. Saponins are also structurally modified by gut bacteria before absorption, so the microbiome is both a target and a processor here. Adding a defined culture changes the population doing that processing in ways nobody has mapped. This is a mechanism worth naming, not a combination worth recommending.

Pulsatilla + ButyrateShort-chain fatty acid production is one of the proposed routes for the reported mucosal effects.

Animal work on Pulsatilla-containing decoctions links improved intestinal barrier measures to changes in microbial metabolite output, butyrate among them. Butyrate is the primary energy substrate for colonocytes, which is established physiology independent of any Pulsatilla finding. Supplying it directly bypasses the fermentation step rather than reinforcing it. The pairing is mechanistic speculation on a non-human base.

Pulsatilla + Saccharomyces BoulardiiBoth are directed at gut barrier and microbial community measures.

S. boulardii is a yeast with its own documented effect on gut barrier measures and pathogen displacement. Pulsatilla saponins are being investigated for overlapping endpoints in animals. Neither the combination nor the botanical alone has controlled human data here. The saponin irritancy question means this is a pairing to think about carefully rather than assemble casually.

Pulsatilla + Slippery ElmMucilage buffers saponin contact with mucosal surfaces.

Triterpenoid saponins are surface-active and can disrupt mucosal membranes on direct contact, which is why Pulsatilla is not used casually or at high dose. A demulcent mucilage forms a physical layer that reduces that direct contact. This is straightforward physical chemistry, the same reason licorice sits in the traditional formula. It reduces irritancy rather than adding benefit.

Pulsatilla + Digestive EnzymesSaponins are surface-active and interact with protein and lipid interfaces.

Triterpenoid saponins act as detergents at membrane and protein surfaces, and detergent behaviour can alter enzyme conformation in a shared solution. Whether that matters at the concentrations reached in a real gut has not been measured. Flag it as a formulation question rather than a demonstrated conflict. Separating the two by an hour costs nothing.
