- Suits people who want an unusual plant fat alongside their usual oils, and anyone interested in pomegranate beyond the juice. Human outcome research is still early.
- How much to take
- No daily amount is on record. Start with one softgel a day taken with a meal that contains fat, since it needs bile salt micelles to be absorbed at all.
- Time to feel it
- This one is measured rather than felt. Plasma fatty acid fractions shift over a few weeks of daily use, and that is where the change shows up.
- The first dose
- Day one is a normal day, apart from the occasional oily burp. The change registers in blood lipid fractions over weeks rather than in how you feel.
- With regular use
- Weeks of daily use raise the conjugated fatty acid content of plasma lipids. Whether that carries through to measured outcomes in people is still an open question.

- Generally well tolerated at food-oil amounts, with mild digestive upset the usual complaint. Check with a clinician first if pregnant, breastfeeding or on blood thinners.

Punicic acid carries three conjugated double bonds, which makes it markedly more prone to oxidation than an ordinary polyunsaturated fatty acid. Tocopherols are chain-breaking antioxidants that interrupt lipid peroxidation propagation in the oil phase. Pomegranate seed oil carries native tocopherols for that reason, and softgel formulas often add more. This is protection of the oil, not a nutritional effect in the body.
Punicic acid is metabolised in humans partly by conjugated linoleic acid, and it competes for the same desaturase, elongase and acyltransferase steps that handle other long chain polyunsaturates. Taking both means the pool of enzymes is shared. What that does to tissue fatty acid composition at supplement doses has not been mapped.
A human feeding study found punicic acid is absorbed and partly converted to 9c,11t conjugated linoleic acid, then incorporated into plasma lipids. Dietary linoleic acid feeds the same downstream pools and may compete for incorporation into phospholipids. The conversion was measured in a small open-label study, and the fraction converted appeared modest.
Long chain fatty acids need bile salt micelles to cross the enterocyte membrane, and micelle formation follows the fat content of the meal. Taking pomegranate seed oil with other dietary fat supports that process. Medium chain triglycerides also serve as a carrier oil in liquid formulas, which is a formulation role rather than a nutritional one.
Rosemary extract standardised to carnosic acid and carnosol is a widely used natural antioxidant in polyunsaturated oils, slowing the onset of rancidity. Given how oxidation-prone the conjugated triene structure is, that matters for shelf life in this oil more than in most. The purpose is keeping the oil intact in the pack.
Astaxanthin partitions into the lipid phase and quenches singlet oxygen and peroxyl radicals there. In an oil-filled softgel it adds a second antioxidant mechanism alongside tocopherols. It also tints the fill, which formulators either want or work around.
When tocopherol quenches a lipid radical it becomes a tocopheroxyl radical, and ascorbate at the interface hands back an electron to restore it. That recycling extends how long a given amount of vitamin E keeps working. It is standard antioxidant biochemistry, relevant here because of how readily this fatty acid oxidises.

Punicic acid is an 18-carbon fat with three double bonds in a row, and it makes up 65 to 85 percent of the fat in pomegranate seed oil.
Its three double bonds sit right next to each other rather than spaced apart, which sets it apart from ordinary plant omega-3 fat and makes it break down with oxygen much more easily.
As a long chain fatty acid, it needs bile salts to form absorbable droplets, so it's taken with food that contains fat.
Once absorbed in people, some punicic acid gets converted into a related fat form and shows up in blood fat fractions.

The main fat in pomegranate seeds, pressed or CO2-extracted out of the seed left over from juicing. It is an unusual fat with three double bonds bunched together, which is why it goes off fast and why bottles are filled under nitrogen with antioxidants in them. Take it with a meal containing fat.
Made from a plant. What ends up in the capsule tracks the harvest, so batch testing and a stated marker matter more here than with a made molecule.
