The root carries phenolic glycosides and coumarin-type constituents alongside its characteristic methoxybenzaldehyde. Ascorbate reduces phenoxyl radicals back to the parent phenol in vitro, which extends their scavenging capacity. This is the general redox behaviour of the compound class rather than a finding on this root. It sits at the level of chemistry, not clinical effect.

Polyphenol-containing root preparations bind non-heme iron and reduce the absorbed fraction from the same meal.
