Lemon balm and spikenard both sit in the calming register and appear together in blends. The direction of effect is the same, so the stack is additive whatever the individual mechanisms turn out to be. Neither is characterised well enough to predict the size of the combination. Products pair these because both are marketed around calm, not because a shared mechanism has been described for spikenard. Jatamansi essential oil is lipophilic and heavy in sesquiterpenes that do not disperse in water. A medium-chain triglyceride carrier disperses the oil and softens its mucosal contact in oral formats. This is delivery chemistry, applying to the oil and not to the powdered root. It changes handling, not potency.
Rhodiola is generally used in the stimulating and daytime register while spikenard sits in the calming and evening one. Putting both in the same daily regimen means pushing in two directions at once, which makes it hard to read what either is doing. Splitting them by time of day is the usual answer. Where Spikenard comes from.
Spikenard is a Himalayan root with a heavy, earthy aroma and a very long history in both Ayurvedic and Mediterranean use. It is closely related to valerian and shares some of the same compounds. It is also a protected species under CITES and one of the more adulterated botanicals in trade, so where it came from and whether the paperwork exists matters as much as the dose on the label.
Made from a plant. What ends up in the capsule tracks the harvest, so batch testing and a stated marker matter more here than with a made molecule.
Rhizome and root of a high-altitude Himalayan perennial, historically wild-collected in Nepal, India and Bhutan. Listed on CITES Appendix II, so legal trade requires documentation.
