What Talc actually does.

Talc is hydrated magnesium silicate, Mg3Si4O10(OH)2, built from sheets of silica tetrahedra sandwiching a magnesium hydroxide layer.

Those sheets are held to each other only by weak van der Waals forces, so they slide past one another under light shear. That slip is what makes talc the softest mineral on the Mohs scale and what gives it its glidant and anti-adherent function.

Where Talc comes from.

Talc is dug out of the ground as rock. The cleanest rock is picked out, washed and separated from the minerals around it, then ground into a fine powder. Before it can go into a tablet, each batch is tested against a published standard, including a check for the minerals that can sit next to talc in the deposit.
