- They're more controversial. Natural colorants like turmeric, beet juice, and spirulina do the same job without the debates about safety.
- Should I avoid supplements with artificial colors?
- It's an easy win. There are plenty of supplements without dyes that work just as well. Why accept any risk for something that's purely cosmetic?
- Do artificial colors affect adults or just kids?
- The hyperactivity research focused on children. There's less evidence for adult effects, but the 'zero benefit, some risk' logic still applies.
- Are gummy vitamins worse for this?
- Often, yes. Gummies tend to use more artificial colors to look appealing. Check the label or choose brands that use natural colorants.
- Is the EU stricter about this?
- Yes. The EU requires warning labels on products containing certain artificial dyes. This has pushed many European manufacturers to switch to natural alternatives.
Why these belong in the same formula. Each row says what the basis is, from settled biochemistry through to a trial that measured the pair.
Riboflavin is degraded by visible light, and a pigmented coating layer absorbs that light before it reaches the core. Colourants are used as light barriers for this reason as much as for appearance.
Cyanocobalamin loses potency on light exposure, so a pigmented outer layer reduces the light dose reaching it during shelf storage. The pigment does no chemistry on the vitamin itself, it simply blocks photons.
Beta-carotene gives yellow to orange shades and is used where a formulator wants colour from a nutrient source rather than a certified dye. It occupies the same position in the formula and contributes to total appearance. Unlike a certified dye it also carries a nutritional identity, which is a labelling and dosing consideration rather than a benefit of the pairing.
Curcumin is a strong yellow pigment used for appearance in foods and capsules. It fades under light and shifts colour with pH, which is why synthetic dyes displaced it in some applications. Where both appear, the visual result is the sum of the two.
Lycopene supplies red to pink shades from tomato or fermentation sources. It is oxygen and light sensitive, so it is usually delivered as a stabilised beadlet. As a colour source it sits alongside or in place of a certified red dye.
Activated charcoal adsorbs small organic molecules onto its porous surface without discriminating usefully between them. Water-soluble dye molecules are exactly the size and polarity class it binds, which is why charcoal-containing products discolour their neighbours in a blend. The same non-selectivity is why charcoal is worth flagging next to anything else in the capsule.
Ascorbic acid is a reducing agent and azo dyes carry a reducible nitrogen-nitrogen double bond as their colour-bearing group. In solution the two react and the colour fades, which is a known formulation problem in vitamin C beverages. The consequence is appearance drift, not a change in the vitamin's own activity.
Several dye chromophores change absorbance with pH, so an alkalising ingredient in the same formula shifts the observed shade. Bicarbonate raises pH in solution as soon as the product is mixed. This is straightforward solution chemistry and it affects appearance only.
