- French tarragon tastes of aniseed and faintly numbs the tongue. The extract used in research barely smells of anything and brings no sensation with it.
- The overlooked benefit
- The two varieties are one species but chemically different plants. Almost all the extract research used the near-scentless Russian one, not the leaf in your kitchen.

Why these belong in the same formula. Each row says what the basis is, from settled biochemistry through to a trial that measured the pair.
Russian tarragon extracts and chromium both appear in blood sugar support formulas, working through different routes: chromium as a component of chromodulin in insulin signalling, tarragon phenolics through carbohydrate-digesting enzyme inhibition in laboratory systems. Anyone already on glucose-lowering medication should count both, since the effects run in the same direction. Human data for the combination specifically is not available.
Cinnamon polyphenols and tarragon phenolics both act on carbohydrate digestion and uptake in laboratory work. Stacking them makes the direction of effect additive rather than novel. The practical relevance is monitoring, not potency: anyone tracking blood sugar should know both are in the formula.
Berberine acts largely through AMP-activated protein kinase, a route distinct from anything attributed to tarragon. Because the direction of effect is shared, the combination warrants attention in anyone already using glucose-lowering medication. Berberine also brings its own strong CYP3A4 and P-glycoprotein interactions, which tarragon does not.
Artemisia dracunculus extract was promoted for some years as improving creatine transport into muscle, on the basis of a small number of studies with mixed results. The available human work did not establish a plasma or muscle creatine advantage, and a failure to detect a difference is not proof there is none. Read this pairing as a marketing-driven claim with thin support rather than a settled effect.
French tarragon essential oil contains estragole, which is converted by cytochrome P450 to 1'-hydroxyestragole and then to a DNA-reactive sulfate ester. Anything that shifts P450 or sulfotransferase activity changes the balance between activation and detoxification. This is why concentrated tarragon oil is treated differently from the culinary herb, and it is a reason to keep concentrated estragole exposure low rather than to reach for a protective co-supplement.
Tarragon carries its own flavonoids and phenolic acids that pass through the same glucuronidation and sulfation enzymes as quercetin. Taken in quantity together, they compete for that finite conjugation capacity. The practical effect at culinary intakes is negligible.
Gymnema acts on intestinal glucose absorption and on sweet taste receptors, a different route from tarragon's phenolic enzyme inhibition. Formulators combine them for coverage across mechanisms. The pairing is formulation logic rather than a tested combination.

Two versions of the same plant. The one in your kitchen smells of aniseed and is a poor match for the one used in supplements, which barely smells of anything. If the label does not say which variety, that is a gap worth asking about.
Made from a plant. What ends up in the capsule tracks the harvest, so batch testing and a stated marker matter more here than with a made molecule.
