What Thuja is, and what it does.

Does it work
It suits herbal formulators who know exactly which preparation they hold. Everyone else should note that the oil, the tincture and a homeopathic dilution are three different things.
How much to take
No dose figure is on record, and thujone intake is capped by regulation rather than raised for effect. Any amount belongs with a qualified herbal practitioner.
Time to feel it
Nobody has measured a time course in a controlled trial. Nothing here is meant to arrive on a schedule you can watch.
The first dose
Day one of a water-based leaf extract passes without a sensation to report. The distilled oil is a different material and is not one to experiment with.
With regular use
Weeks of daily use of the leaf extract haven't been measured. For thujone-containing preparations, regulation caps continuous intake rather than encouraging it.
How well tolerated
This is the careful one. Thujone blocks an inhibitory brain receptor and raises nerve excitability, which is why it's capped by law. Don't take the oil internally, and avoid in pregnancy.
How it feels
Sharp, resinous and camphor-like to smell. Water-based extracts taste woody and bitter, and no subjective effect is reported at permitted amounts.
The overlooked benefit
The water-soluble polysaccharides don't distil over with the oil, so an aqueous extract carries almost no thujone. That's the real difference between two products named thuja.

Thuja + GABASame receptor family, opposite direction of effect.

Thujone blocks the GABA-A chloride channel, which reduces the inhibitory signal that GABA-directed supplements aim to increase. Whether oral GABA reaches central receptors at all is separately contested, so the practical size of the clash is uncertain. The direction of it is not.

Thuja + ChamomileApigenin, chamomile's main flavone, binds at the benzodiazepine site of the GABA-A complex, the same receptor thujone antagonises.

The two act on the same receptor complex in opposing directions, which makes them a poor formulation pair despite both being common calming-category botanicals. Apigenin's receptor binding is characterised in laboratory work rather than in people. Read the conflict as mechanistic rather than clinical.

Thuja + Vitamin EEstablished autoxidation chemistry of terpene-rich essential oils, which form peroxides on exposure to oxygen and light.

Monoterpene oils oxidise into peroxides and epoxides that are more irritating to skin than the fresh oil. Tocopherol added to the oil phase intercepts the chain-propagating radicals and slows that. This is a shelf-life and skin-tolerance measure, nothing to do with what the oil does biologically.

Undiluted Thuja oil is a skin irritant, and a neutral medium-chain triglyceride carrier lowers the concentration at the skin surface while keeping the terpenes in solution. The carrier does not change the chemistry, only the delivered concentration. This is formulation convention.

Thuja + RosemaryOverlapping monoterpene and monoterpene-ketone chemistry, including camphor and thujone-related ketones in some rosemary chemotypes.

Both oils carry neuroactive monoterpene ketones, and camphor-rich rosemary chemotypes contribute to the same convulsant-risk category that constrains thujone intake. Stacking two ketone-rich oils raises the combined ketone load, which is the parameter that intake limits are written against. Keep the total in view rather than each oil separately.

Thuja + Oregano oilBoth are concentrated essential oils that irritate mucosa at undiluted strength.

Carvacrol and thujone are chemically unrelated but share a dose-limiting property: direct irritancy to gut and skin surfaces. Combining two neat oils adds those effects even though the pharmacology differs. Dilution and total oil load are the controlling variables.
