This is a root from an alpine daisy relative, grown high on the Tibetan plateau and used in Chinese herbal formulas under the name chuan mu xiang. Its main compounds are sesquiterpene lactones, the same family of chemicals that makes some daisies cause skin rashes, so if you react to chamomile, feverfew or ragweed, be careful here.
