Licorice carries its own potassium and blood pressure considerations at sustained intakes, so the pairing needs a light hand on the licorice side. The rationale is traditional and sensory rather than clinical.
Thyme supplies volatile phenols while yerba santa supplies flavanones and resin. The two chemistries do not overlap much, so the blend broadens rather than concentrates the phenolic profile. Absorption of both is limited and glucuronidation-dependent.
Ascorbate can reduce phenoxyl radicals formed when flavonoids scavenge oxidants, regenerating the parent flavonoid. That cycle is well characterised in solution and in model systems. Whether it changes anything measurable after eating a flavonoid-containing herb is a separate and unanswered question. This is mechanism, not an outcome.
Flavonoids and tannins bind non-heme iron before absorption, which is the same reason strong tea lowers iron uptake from a meal. Yerba santa leaf preparations carry a polyphenol load that falls into this class. Anyone taking an iron supplement should separate it from the herb by a couple of hours. The interaction is mechanistic and dose dependent.
Homoeriodictyol, isolated from Eriodictyon, suppresses perceived bitterness and is used commercially for exactly that purpose. Curcumin-containing preparations are notoriously bitter and earthy. Pairing them is a palatability decision at the formulation bench, not a biological synergy. It changes taste, not absorption.
