No study gave these as a pair, so they are not in the card above. But the reason they belong together is settled biochemistry, not a guess, so it is worth knowing.
Citrus flavanones and ascorbate co-occur in the fruit and regenerate one another in the aqueous phase. Buddha's hand is unusual among citrus in being almost all peel and pith, so the flavonoid share is high relative to the juice-borne ascorbate. This is redox chemistry measured on markers, not a clinical result.
Hesperidin is the dominant flavanone glycoside of citrus peel and albedo, which is essentially all this fruit consists of. A hesperidin supplement and a Buddha's hand peel preparation are drawing on the same compound class. Concentration in the fruit varies with cultivar, ripeness and how much albedo is retained.
Citrus flavonoid glycosides are deglycosylated by intestinal and colonic enzymes before the aglycones are absorbed and conjugated. The same microbial machinery handles quercetin glycosides. Taking them together means competing for a shared conversion and conjugation capacity.
The albedo of citrus is one of the commercial sources of pectin, and Buddha's hand is mostly albedo. Eating the candied or dried peel therefore delivers a soluble fibre load alongside the aromatics. That fibre is fermented in the colon like any other pectin.
Both are long-standing digestive aromatics in Chinese and Japanese practice, and they appear together in teas and preserves. The pairing rests on tradition and flavour rather than on trial evidence. Nothing here should be read as a demonstrated effect.
Buddha's hand peel oil is dominated by limonene and related monoterpenes, and peppermint oil brings menthol from the same chemical family. Both are used as carminative aromatics. Combined essential oil doses can irritate the oesophagus, so enteric coating exists for a reason.
Citrus peel flavonoids sit in the water phase and tocopherols in the lipid phase, and the two regenerate each other at the interface. This is the standard rationale for pairing a citrus bioflavonoid with a tocopherol in a formula. It is measured on oxidation markers.
Limonene and the other peel monoterpenes are lipophilic and disperse poorly in water. A medium chain triglyceride carrier keeps them in solution and helps them clear the stomach with the fat phase. This is a formulation matter rather than a biological interaction.
Polyphenol-rich peel binds non-heme iron in the gut lumen, while the ascorbate present in citrus pushes in the opposite direction by reducing iron to the more absorbable ferrous state. Which effect dominates depends on how much of each is in the meal. Anyone rebuilding low iron status should not assume the net effect is favourable.
Some citrus species carry furanocoumarins that inhibit intestinal CYP3A4 and can slow clearance of compounds handled by that enzyme. Whether Citrus medica var. sarcodactylis carries them at meaningful concentration is not well characterised. Read this as a mechanistic flag for concentrated extracts and check with a pharmacist if prescription medication is involved.
