Metallic magnesium reacts with water to release molecular hydrogen, which is the chemistry behind hydrogen-generating tablets that produce a hydrogen-rich drink without an electrolysis unit. The magnesium left behind dissolves as magnesium hydroxide and raises the pH of the glass. Anyone counting magnesium intake should count what the tablet contributes.

Potassium is one of the cations that migrates toward the cathode during electrolysis, so the alkaline stream concentrates whatever potassium the feed water already held. Source water varies widely, so the potassium delivered per litre is a property of the supply rather than of the appliance. People managing potassium intake for any reason should read a water analysis rather than assume.

Both raise the pH of what reaches the stomach, and taken together the alkalinity is additive. Gastric acid secretion buffers an alkaline drink within the stomach lumen, so the systemic effect of either is small compared with the local one. Timing them apart from an acid-dependent supplement avoids an unintended interaction.

Betaine hydrochloride is taken specifically to lower gastric pH, and an alkaline water works in the opposite direction in the same compartment. Drinking a large volume of high-pH water alongside it partly cancels the intent. Separating the two by an hour is the usual formulation answer.

Non-heme iron stays soluble and absorbable in the ferrous state, which an acidic gastric environment favours. Flooding the stomach with high-pH water at the moment an iron supplement is swallowed pushes chemistry the other way and can reduce the fraction that dissolves. The practical step is to take iron with an acidic drink instead.

Ascorbate is a water-soluble reducing agent and dissolved molecular hydrogen is a weak selective reductant, so the two act on overlapping redox chemistry in the aqueous compartment. They have not been studied together in people at ordinary intakes. Read the pairing as mechanistic rather than clinical.

Calcium is a divalent cation that concentrates in the alkaline stream during electrolysis, and hard source water can leave a visible scale on the plates for the same reason. The calcium a litre delivers therefore tracks source-water hardness. It is a contributor to daily mineral intake worth counting.
