This plant's main compounds are a class of resin acids that make up the sticky coating on its flower heads.
It also contains flavonoids, saponins and a small amount of volatile oil, and since the resin and flavonoid parts separate out differently, the solvent used for extraction decides which one ends up dominating the finished product.
Because the resin part is fat-soluble and doesn't dissolve well in water, a water infusion of this plant extracts a noticeably different set of compounds than an alcohol-water tincture does.
Where Grindelia comes from.
Gumweed. The flower heads are covered in a sticky resin, and that resin is most of what the plant is used for. Water barely touches it, which is why grindelia is usually sold as an alcohol tincture or a dried extract rather than a tea.
Made from a plant. What ends up in the capsule tracks the harvest, so batch testing and a stated marker matter more here than with a made molecule.
Aerial parts of Grindelia robusta, G. camporum or G. squarrosa, collected at or just before full bloom when the resinous exudate on the involucre is heaviest.
