Helenalin-type lactones alkylate a cysteine residue on the NF-kB p65 subunit, and curcumin interferes with the same pathway at upstream kinase steps. Arnica flowers contain sesquiterpene lactones that react chemically with proteins in the body. That same reactive chemistry is what makes the herb active and also why it isn't meant to be taken internally.
Arnica is conventionally used on the skin, not swallowed. Taking the undiluted crude herb internally causes gut irritation and effects on the heart, which is why oral arnica products are highly diluted homeopathic preparations rather than full-strength extracts.
The flower also contains flavonoid glycosides, phenolic acids, and a small essential oil fraction, which contribute antioxidant activity to the extract and give the finished product its color and smell.
Sesquiterpene lactones are a known cause of skin sensitization in this plant family. If you react to ragweed, chamomile, or feverfew, you're more likely to react to arnica on your skin too.
