No study gave these as a pair, so they are not in the card above. But the reason they belong together is settled biochemistry, not a guess, so it is worth knowing.
Ferrous salts taste strongly metallic and can stain teeth on contact. A cellulose ether film separates the salt from the mouth until the tablet passes the oesophagus. This is why almost every iron tablet is coated rather than left bare.
Iron salts are hygroscopic and oxidise on the tablet surface, which changes colour and appearance before anything reaches the person taking it. A hypromellose film is a physical barrier to atmospheric moisture. The coating does not change how much iron is absorbed once the tablet disintegrates.
Ascorbic acid picks up water from the air and browns as it degrades, so a moisture barrier on the tablet surface is a stability measure. Hypromellose films slow water vapour transmission without being fully impermeable. The film protects the tablet in the pack, not in the stomach.
Fish oil develops a characteristic odour as its fatty acids oxidise, which is a major reason people stop taking it. A cellulose ether coat over a softgel or a tablet reduces surface oxygen exposure and covers the smell. It does not stop oxidation that has already begun inside the fill.
Freeze-dried organisms lose viability mainly through moisture uptake, and a hypromellose shell holds less residual water than a gelatin one. That is why hypromellose is the conventional shell choice for dried cultures rather than a claim about the organisms themselves. The polymer plays no biological role.
At higher viscosity grades and higher inclusion levels, hypromellose forms a hydrated gel layer that slows the release of an active from a tablet core. That is a matrix function rather than a coating one, and it is what distinguishes a timed-release tablet from an immediate-release one. Which grade is used is what decides the release profile.
Curcuminoids are intense yellow pigments that transfer to fingers, packaging and mouth. An opaque or pigmented film coat contains that. The coating has no effect on curcuminoid solubility once the tablet disintegrates.
Charcoal powder marks anything it touches and is unpleasant to swallow loose. A capsule shell or film coat contains it until the shell dissolves. Once the shell opens the charcoal's adsorptive surface is exposed as usual.
Betaine HCl draws water from the air and can go tacky in a bottle, and the free acid is irritating to mucous membranes on direct contact. A film coat is the barrier that keeps the tablet intact until swallowed. The polymer itself is chemically inert to the acid.
Protein enzymes lose activity when exposed to moisture and to gastric acid. A hypromellose film provides the moisture barrier, and an added enteric polymer is what actually delays release past the stomach. Plain hypromellose alone dissolves at gastric pH and does not delay release.
Psyllium and hypromellose both take up water and form a viscous gel, so a hypromellose-coated tablet taken with a psyllium dose adds a small amount of the same behaviour. The quantity in a coating is a fraction of a percent of a psyllium serving, so the contribution is trivial. Taking either without enough water is the real point.
