Why these belong in the same formula. Each row says what the basis is, from settled biochemistry through to a trial that measured the pair.
Spanish oregano oil is carvacrol-dominant and thyme oil is usually thymol-dominant, and the two are structural isomers that behave similarly in membranes. Blending them stacks the same mechanism rather than adding a second one. That matters for dosing, because the combined phenol load is what drives both the activity and the mucosal irritation. Count the total phenol content, not the number of oils.
Material sold as Spanish oregano may be Thymbra capitata from the Mediterranean or Lippia graveolens from Mexico, and generic oregano oil is usually Origanum vulgare. All three run high in carvacrol but the accompanying terpene profile differs. Stacking a named Spanish oregano with a generic oregano oil doubles the same phenols under two labels. Read the botanical name on the certificate of analysis rather than the common name.
Rosemary diterpenes and oregano phenols both donate hydrogen to lipid radicals and are used together to slow oxidation in fats and oils. The pairing is standard in food formulation for exactly this reason. In a capsule the same chemistry protects the oil payload. This is stability, not a physiological claim.
Tocopherol is consumed as it quenches lipid radicals, and a second phenolic pool can reduce the tocopheroxyl radical back to tocopherol. In an oil-filled softgel this extends the useful life of both. The interaction is well described in lipid systems and is mostly a shelf-life argument. It is not evidence of an antioxidant effect inside the body.
Carvacrol-rich oil is poorly water soluble and directly irritating to mucosa at full strength. Dilution into a medium-chain triglyceride carrier both disperses it and blunts that irritation. Most tolerable oral formats are built this way. The carrier changes delivery and tolerability, not the amount of active present.
Carvacrol disrupts the cytoplasmic membrane of a wide range of bacteria, and live probiotic organisms are bacteria. Co-formulating free oil with a live culture in the same capsule risks killing the culture during storage. Separating them by dose timing, or enteric-coating one of the two, is the usual approach. Whether the same competition occurs in the gut lumen at realistic doses is less clear.
Polyphenol-rich leaf preparations bind non-heme iron in the gut and lower its absorbed fraction. This applies to a water extract or a dried leaf infusion far more than to a distilled essential oil, which carries little polyphenol. The distinction between the oil and the leaf matters here and is often blurred on labels. Spacing an iron dose away from a strong herbal infusion is the practical answer.
Aromatic carminative herbs have long been combined in the same preparations, and oregano with warming spices is one of those combinations. The rationale is historical use and palatability rather than a described biochemical interaction. Nothing about the pairing changes the phenol content. Read it as tradition, not pharmacology.

Where Spanish Oregano comes from.
Spanish oregano is a strongly aromatic leaf, and what you get depends entirely on how it was processed. Steam the leaf and you get a concentrated oil that is mostly carvacrol. Soak it in water or alcohol instead and you get a different set of compounds. Same plant, two quite different ingredients.
Made from a plant. What ends up in the capsule tracks the harvest, so batch testing and a stated marker matter more here than with a made molecule.
