Why these belong in the same formula. Each row says what the basis is, from settled biochemistry through to a trial that measured the pair.
Spearmint and lemon balm both accumulate rosmarinic acid as their dominant caffeic acid derivative. Combining them stacks the same phenolic rather than adding a distinct one, which matters when reading a blended label that implies two mechanisms. The volatile fractions do differ, carvone in one and citral-type aldehydes in the other. So the aroma is additive even where the phenolic is not.
Spearmint oil is carvone-dominant and contains essentially no menthol, while peppermint oil is menthol-dominant. That single difference explains why they behave differently on smooth muscle and on the cold receptor, despite both being called mint. Products that use the words interchangeably are describing two different oils. Check which one a label actually specifies.
Both contribute to the same phenolic pool in a beverage or extract blend and both are consumed by the same oxidative processes. In a formulation this improves oxidative stability of the blend. It is not a demonstrated additive effect in people. Green tea also carries caffeine unless the extract is specified decaffeinated, which changes the profile of the finished product entirely.
Spearmint extract and theanine appear together in cognition-oriented blends because both are positioned around calm attention. The pairing is commercial convention. No shared pathway is established between them, and stacking two positioned ingredients does not by itself produce a combined effect. Read it as formulation, not mechanism.
Mint and chamomile have been infused together for a very long time, mostly for digestive comfort after meals and for palatability. The pairing is well documented as practice. What it does beyond taste and warm fluid is not established. It ships as tradition.
Aromatic carminatives are conventionally combined, and mint with ginger is one of the oldest of those combinations. Both contribute volatile constituents to the same infusion. The basis is documented traditional use rather than a measured interaction. Read it that way.
Rosmarinic acid and related polyphenols form complexes with non-heme iron and lower the fraction absorbed from the same meal. A strong mint infusion taken with an iron supplement is the situation where this shows up. A distilled essential oil carries almost no polyphenol and does not raise the same issue. Spacing the two by an hour or two is the usual answer.
Ascorbate can reduce phenoxyl radicals back to the parent phenolic, which is why the two are often paired in liquid formulations for stability. Ascorbate in the same meal also partly offsets the polyphenol penalty on non-heme iron absorption. Both effects are chemistry rather than clinical outcome. They are worth knowing when building a beverage.
Spearmint essential oil has measurable antimicrobial activity in vitro, and that activity does not distinguish a probiotic organism from anything else. Co-packing free oil with a live culture is a stability risk during storage. The leaf and the aqueous extract carry far less volatile oil and pose much less of an issue. Which form is in the product decides whether this matters at all.
Mint is added to caffeinated beverages for cooling aroma and to mask bitterness. There is no established pharmacological interaction between carvone and caffeine. Any perceived change in the experience is sensory. Read it as flavour work.

Rosmarinic acid is the main non-volatile phenolic compound in spearmint leaf, and it's the marker most water-based spearmint extracts are standardized to.
Rosmarinic acid and related compounds can bind non-heme iron in the gut and reduce how much of it gets absorbed from the same meal. This is a general effect of polyphenols, not something unique to spearmint.
Carvone and limonene evaporate easily, so they're lost during long boiling. A tea made from the leaf and a steam-distilled oil from the same leaf end up with very different compound profiles.
Where Spearmint comes from.
Spearmint is the mint that tastes like chewing gum rather than the sharp cooling one. Distil it and you get the aroma compounds. Steep it in hot water instead and you get a completely different set of compounds, the polyphenols, with almost none of the aroma. Products built on one of those two routes tell you nothing about the other.
Made from a plant. What ends up in the capsule tracks the harvest, so batch testing and a stated marker matter more here than with a made molecule.
Perennial mint grown commercially in North America, Europe and India. Cultivar choice drives both carvone content in the oil and rosmarinic acid content in the leaf.
Cut before or at early flowering, when volatile content is typically at its peak, then wilted in the field for oil production or dried for leaf material.
Steam distillation yields the carvone-rich oil. Hot-water extraction takes the opposite fraction, recovering rosmarinic acid and other phenolics while losing the volatiles.
Oil is specified by gas chromatography against percent carvone. Aqueous extracts are specified by HPLC against rosmarinic acid or total phenolic content.
Spray drying an aqueous extract usually requires a carrier, which dilutes the assayed content per gram.
