Imperata rhizome is used traditionally for its diuretic effect. Higher urine flow carries potassium and sodium out with it, so sustained use pulls in the opposite direction from a potassium supplement taken to raise status. Whether that matters depends on how much fluid is actually being moved. It is a direction-of-effect point rather than a measured magnitude for this herb.
When urine output rises, sodium, potassium and magnesium leave with the water. Pairing a diuretic botanical with a mixed electrolyte is the conventional way to hold balance rather than chase it. This is standard physiology and does not depend on data for this particular plant. The pairing is about avoiding a deficit, not about adding an effect.
Sustained diuresis increases urinary magnesium loss alongside potassium. That works against a magnesium supplement taken over the same period, particularly at low intakes. Spacing does not help here since the effect is on excretion rather than absorption. Watching intake is the practical response.
Licorice and Imperata rhizome appear together in traditional cooling formulas, which is exactly why this one is worth flagging. Glycyrrhizin drives potassium out in the urine through a mineralocorticoid-like effect, and a diuretic on top of that compounds the potassium loss while pulling the opposite way on sodium and fluid. The combination is common and the electrolyte consequence is well characterised for licorice. Anyone using both for more than a short period should be watching potassium.
Stacking two diuretic botanicals adds their effects on urine flow rather than doing anything new. Dandelion is unusual in that the leaf supplies potassium as it drives it out, which partly self-corrects. That does not apply to the root. Both plants sit on traditional use rather than controlled human data.
Marshmallow root supplies a substantial polysaccharide mucilage that coats mucous membranes on contact. Imperata rhizome supplies simple sugars and a lighter polysaccharide fraction and is used in the same class of preparations. Combining them is a texture and tradition decision. There is no established shared molecular target.
Any high-mucilage preparation raises luminal viscosity, and that slows how quickly co-administered compounds reach the intestinal wall. Where both plants are used together for the mucilage effect, that is the point. Where a separate supplement needs to be absorbed on schedule, spacing it away by a couple of hours is the sensible move. This is a general mucilage property.
Increased urine flow carries sodium with it, which is why prolonged use of any diuretic agent shifts sodium balance. On a low-sodium intake that shift is felt sooner. The interaction is physiological and not specific to this plant. It is worth naming because diuretic botanicals are often taken without any thought to what leaves with the water.
