Zhi mu is the dried rhizome of Anemarrhena asphodeloides. Its characterised constituents are steroidal saponins of the timosaponin series, chiefly timosaponin A-III and B-II, together with the xanthone glycosides mangiferin and neomangiferin.
Timosaponins are amphipathic steroidal glycosides. Their sugar chains determine water solubility, and hydrolysis of those sugars in the gut by bacterial glycosidases changes which molecule actually reaches circulation.
Mangiferin is a C-glycosylated xanthone. The carbon-carbon sugar linkage resists ordinary acid and enzymatic hydrolysis, which is why its absorption is low and why gut bacterial metabolism matters to its fate.
Saponins lower surface tension and can interact with membrane sterols, which is the general basis of their foaming behaviour in water and their potential to irritate mucosa at high concentration.
Where Zhi Mu Extract comes from.
It comes from the underground stem of a plant grown mainly in northern China. The stems are washed, dried and sliced, sometimes heated with salt water the traditional way, then soaked in water or alcohol to pull out the active compounds. The liquid is concentrated, measured and dried into a powder.
Made from a plant. What ends up in the capsule tracks the harvest, so batch testing and a stated marker matter more here than with a made molecule.
Cultivated and wild-collected in northern China and neighbouring regions. The rhizome is the part used; leaves and roots are trimmed away.
