Where Chinese Agarwood comes from.

It comes from a tree that only makes the good stuff after it gets injured. Growers now injure the trees on purpose, then harvest the resin-soaked wood years later. The leaves are also sold, but they are a different ingredient wearing the same name.

Healthy wood contains almost none of the target compounds. After physical injury or fungal colonisation the tree lays down a defensive resin over months to years, and this infiltrated wood is what is harvested. Plantations induce this deliberately by drilling or inoculation.
