Cloudberry is rich in ellagitannins, which gut bacteria convert stepwise to ellagic acid and then to urolithins. Urolithin A is the finished metabolite of that same pathway, so the two sit at opposite ends of one conversion.
Punicalagins and cloudberry ellagitannins both hydrolyse to ellagic acid and feed the same microbial conversion. Combining them raises the substrate load reaching that pathway.
Ellagitannins and other polyphenols bind non-heme iron in the gut lumen into complexes the enterocyte cannot take up. This is settled for polyphenol-rich foods taken in the same dose as iron.
Ascorbate reduces oxidised berry polyphenols back to their active form, and it partly offsets the way those polyphenols hold iron out of solution. Cloudberry itself carries appreciable ascorbate.
Cloudberry is high in vitamin C, and ascorbate regenerates the tocopheroxyl radical back to tocopherol at the water and lipid interface. Cloudberry also carries vitamin C, which pushes in the opposite direction by keeping iron in the reduced state. The net result in any one meal depends on the ratio, so separating a plain iron salt from a large polyphenol dose is the practical reading.
Polyphenols form complexes with divalent minerals in the intestinal lumen, and zinc is among those affected in mineral absorption work with polyphenol-rich foods. The size of the effect from a berry serving has not been quantified here. Spacing a zinc dose from a concentrated berry extract is the conservative approach.
Cloudberry ellagitannins are hydrolysed to ellagic acid and then converted by specific gut bacteria into urolithins, which are the metabolites that actually circulate. Grape seed proanthocyanidins and berry ellagitannins are both condensed and hydrolysable tannins that bind proteins and minerals in the gut. Stacking them raises the total tannin load in a serving, which matters more for mineral absorption than for anything else. This is a formulation consideration, not a measured synergy.
