Why these belong in the same formula. Each row says what the basis is, from settled biochemistry through to a trial that measured the pair.
Alizarin binds calcium tightly enough that laboratories use it to stain calcified tissue, and madder-fed animals develop stained bone and teeth for the same reason. Taken alongside a calcium supplement, the anthraquinone fraction has an obvious binding partner. This is settled coordination chemistry, not an inference from a trial.
The hydroxyanthraquinones in Rubia cordifolia carry the ortho-hydroxy arrangement that binds ferric iron, the same structural feature that makes these compounds historical dye mordant chemistry. Non-heme iron taken in the same window is the most likely to be affected. Separating the two by a few hours removes the question.
Where an anthraquinone-rich botanical is taken with a meal, ascorbate keeps dietary iron reduced and more absorbable, partly offsetting polyphenol and quinone binding. The offset is partial rather than complete. This is standard meal chemistry applied to a specific plant class.
Manjistha and turmeric appear together across classical Ayurvedic formulations, particularly those directed at skin. Both are polyphenolic and both are handled by phase II conjugation, so at high doses they draw on the same clearance capacity. The pairing is traditional practice with substantial history and no controlled human comparison.
Licorice is added to many traditional multi-herb formulas both for its own properties and to soften the taste of bitter roots. It brings its own constraint through glycyrrhizin at sustained intake, which affects potassium and blood pressure. Read the pairing as formulation tradition.
They are combined in botanical formulas built around liver support, and both are cleared largely by glucuronidation. At high combined doses that shared capacity is a plausible point of interaction in either direction. Neither the pairing nor the interaction has been measured in people.
Quercetin occupies a large share of phase II conjugation capacity at supplemental doses. Anthraquinone aglycones from madder are conjugated by the same enzyme families. Which one ends up with longer exposure is not predictable from structure, so the honest statement is that the two interact rather than that either wins.
Ginger is a near-universal adjuvant in traditional decoctions containing bitter or astringent roots. Its role is as much about tolerability of the preparation as anything pharmacological. The pairing is convention.
Condensed tannins and hydroxyanthraquinones both bind dietary minerals and both bind proteins. Taking them together raises the total binding load on a meal well beyond what either label implies. For anyone relying on plant iron, this pairing is the one to space apart.

Where Indian Madder comes from.
It is the red root of a climbing plant, dug up, dried and ground or soaked to pull the colour out. The one thing worth checking is which madder species is actually in the product, because a close relative is restricted in Europe.
Made from a plant. What ends up in the capsule tracks the harvest, so batch testing and a stated marker matter more here than with a made molecule.
A climbing perennial of the Rubiaceae harvested across the Indian subcontinent, the Himalayan foothills and parts of east Asia. Roots are lifted after two to three seasons when pigment content is highest.
Roots are washed free of soil and sun dried. Drying develops colour as glycosides break down toward the free anthraquinones.
Milled root is percolated. Water gives the traditional decoction fraction, ethanol and water gives higher anthraquinone recovery.
Solvent is removed under vacuum and the concentrate is spray dried onto a carrier.
HPLC assay against purpurin or total anthraquinones, with species identity confirmation to exclude Rubia tinctorum, which is restricted in Europe on genotoxicity grounds.
