Magnesium oxide, citrate and sulfate draw water into the bowel lumen osmotically, which softens stool. That adds to the lubricating and stimulating actions already in this formula. The combined effect can be stronger than intended, so the pairing is worth counting rather than assuming.
Inulin is fermented by colonic bacteria to short-chain fatty acids and increases bacterial mass, both of which shape stool consistency and transit. It works upstream of the motility effect the formula's rhubarb component contributes. Gas and bloating during the first days of inulin are common and are dose-related.
Colonic bacteria are also what convert rhubarb sennoside-type glycosides into their active aglycone forms. Shifting the bacterial population therefore shifts how much of that conversion happens. The direction of that shift is not predictable from a product label, so read it as a real interaction rather than a guaranteed benefit.
Slippery elm mucilage forms a viscous gel that coats the gut lining and softens stool. It is paired with stimulating formulas to smooth the experience. The basis is the physical behaviour of the polysaccharide, described in monographs rather than in a combination trial.
Like slippery elm, marshmallow root supplies a water-holding polysaccharide mucilage. Traditional practice places demulcents alongside stimulating herbs for that reason. This is monograph and traditional grounding, not a tested pair.
Ginger is a standard companion herb in Chinese formulas that move the bowel, used to settle the stomach and support gastric emptying. The pairing is long-standing formulation practice with supporting prokinetic work in the ginger literature. It is a tradition-plus-mechanism basis, not a study of this formula with ginger added.
Licorice is the conventional harmonising and taste-moderating herb in this tradition and is often added to formulas built on rhubarb. Glycyrrhizin also has its own well-described effect on mineralocorticoid signalling and potassium handling at sustained doses. Menthol blocks calcium entry into intestinal smooth muscle, which relaxes spasm. Placed alongside a formula that increases motility, it changes the character of the response rather than simply adding to it. Enteric coating matters, since unprotected peppermint oil releases in the stomach and can cause reflux.
Partially hydrolysed guar gum is a low-viscosity soluble fibre fermented to short-chain fatty acids in the colon. It is used where bulking fibre is wanted with less gas burden than inulin. The grounding is fibre physiology described in reviews, not a trial with this formula.
This formula already relies on hemp seed fatty oil for stool lubrication, and added dietary oil works on the same physical principle. The combination is a matter of total oil load rather than a novel mechanism. Regard it as additive on one axis only.
Magnolia bark is one of the constituent herbs in the classical construction of this formula, contributing magnolol and honokiol neolignans. Where a product supplies it separately, the two overlap directly. Check total intake rather than counting them as unrelated ingredients.
Increased stool water carries electrolytes with it, and potassium is the one most affected by sustained bowel water loss. Anything that increases bowel transit therefore sits alongside potassium status. This is standard physiology and is a caution to note, not a benefit to claim.
Rhubarb carries tannins and anthraquinone glycosides, and polyphenolic structures of that class bind divalent cations such as calcium in the gut lumen. Separating intake by a couple of hours is the usual formulation answer. The chemistry is established for the compound class; the specific pair has not been quantified.

Ma Zi Ren Wan is a multi-herb classical formula whose usual construction centres on hemp seed (Cannabis sativa seed, huo ma ren) with rhubarb root, apricot kernel, white peony root, magnolia bark and bitter orange.
Hemp seed and apricot kernel supply fatty oil, which acts physically as a stool lubricant and softener in the bowel lumen.
Rhubarb root contains anthraquinone glycosides, principally sennoside and rhein derivatives, which are hydrolysed by colonic bacteria to active aglycones that increase colonic motility and reduce water reabsorption.
Because that conversion is bacterial, the effect of anthraquinone glycosides depends on colonic microbial activity and appears after a delay of several hours rather than immediately.
