Why these belong in the same formula. Each row says what the basis is, from settled biochemistry through to a trial that measured the pair.
As free fatty acids of chain length in the C16 to C20 range, macaenes require bile salt micelle formation to be absorbed, exactly like dietary fat. A lipid vehicle or simply a fat-containing meal provides the bile stimulus and the micellar phase. Taking a dry lipid-extracted maca concentrate on an empty stomach works against the chemistry.
The double bonds in the macaene structure are sites for lipid peroxidation on exposure to oxygen, light and warmth. Tocopherol interrupts the propagation step of that chain reaction, which is why it appears in essentially every fatty-acid supplement. Without it a lipid-rich maca concentrate loses labelled content and gains oxidation products over shelf life. This is stability chemistry rather than a biological pairing.
The macaenes are the fatty acid portion of the macamide molecule, so the two classes are chemically continuous rather than independent. Maca lipid extracts are standardised to macamides, macaenes or the sum of both, and a product declaring one implies a quantity of the other. Attributing an effect to macaenes alone when the extract contains both is not defensible. Read them as one fraction with two labels.
Lecithin lowers the interfacial tension between the lipid fraction and gut water, forming mixed micelles ahead of the natural bile process. This is generic lipid formulation practice applied to a lipid extract. No pharmacokinetic measurement of macaene exposure with and without lecithin exists in people.
Piperine slows intestinal and hepatic conjugation of many co-administered lipophilic compounds, which in principle would raise exposure to the macaene and macamide fraction. Whether this changes anything measurable has not been tested. Read it as mechanistic reasoning rather than a demonstrated combination.
Whole maca root carries glucosinolates, though a lipid extract standardised to macaenes carries essentially none of them, since they partition into the aqueous fraction. The distinction matters: mineral and thyroid considerations attach to whole-root powder, not to the isolated lipid fraction. This row is really a flag that the two product types are not interchangeable.
Isothiocyanates and thiocyanate ions from glucosinolate hydrolysis compete with iodide at the thyroid transporter, which is established endocrine physiology across the whole cabbage family. This applies to whole maca root powder and to gelatinised maca, not to a purified lipid extract where the glucosinolates have been left behind. Anyone with marginal iodine intake taking large amounts of whole maca root should know this.
Maca lipid extracts and arginine appear together in performance and libido formulas because their marketing positions overlap, not because a mechanistic link between them has been shown. There is no shared pathway connecting a fatty acid fraction to nitric oxide synthesis. Read the pairing as commercial formulation practice.
The combination is common in commerce and each ingredient has its own separate literature, but no controlled work examines the pair. Ashwagandha carries its own thyroid-axis considerations, which stack with the glucosinolate issue when whole maca root is used rather than a lipid extract. That stacking is the practical reason to note the pairing at all.

Macaenes are the unsaturated fats characteristic of maca root, and they're also the building block of a related compound class, macamides, which is why the two are usually measured together.
As free fatty acids, macaenes are absorbed the same way any dietary fat is, through normal bile emulsification and gut uptake. There's no special transporter or unique route for them.
The same double bonds that define macaenes also make them prone to breaking down through oxidation, which is why maca lipid extracts need protection from oxygen, light and heat, and why rancidity is the main quality problem for this part of the root.
Maca is related to cabbage and mustard and its whole root contains water-soluble sulfur compounds that get left behind during oil extraction, so a macaene-standardized extract and whole-root powder are chemically quite different products.
Where Macaenes comes from.
Macaenes are the fatty compounds in maca root, a cruciferous vegetable grown very high in the Peruvian Andes. They are chemically the raw material for the macamides, the other marker compound maca products list, which is why the two are almost always measured together. A whole maca powder and a concentrated maca lipid extract are quite different things: the extract has the fats concentrated and the starch and the cabbage-family compounds stripped out. Because these fats have double bonds in them, they go rancid if the product is not kept cool and dark.
Made from a plant. What ends up in the capsule tracks the harvest, so batch testing and a stated marker matter more here than with a made molecule.
A cruciferous root crop grown on the Peruvian and Bolivian altiplano above roughly four thousand metres. Ecotypes are distinguished by hypocotyl colour, yellow, red and black, and the constituent profile differs between them. Altitude and soil are part of the identity, not marketing.
Roots are lifted and traditionally sun-dried over weeks on the altiplano, a slow low-temperature process. Faster mechanical drying is now also used and changes which constituents survive.
Dried root is milled to powder. Optional gelatinisation applies heat and pressure to burst starch granules, which improves digestibility and shifts the per-gram concentration of everything that is not starch.
For a lipid concentrate, hexane, ethanol or supercritical carbon dioxide is used to pull the fatty acid and fatty acid amide fraction away from the starch and the water-soluble glucosinolates.
Content is quantified by HPLC, typically reported as combined macaenes and macamides at a declared percentage. Because the two classes are chemically linked, most commercial assays report the sum rather than macaenes alone.
The whole-root formats and the lipid concentrate are different products with different chemistry, and the ingredient name alone does not say which is present.
