What Omega-5 is, and what it does.
- Does it work
- Suits people already using pomegranate seed oil in a skin or metabolic routine. It sits alongside better-studied fats rather than in place of them.
- How much to take
- No daily amount is on record. Start with the serving on the pack, take it with a meal containing fat, and store it cool because this oil oxidises quickly.
- Time to feel it
- Nobody has measured a time course in people. Skin and blood fat measures move over weeks, so change is read on a panel or in skin condition.
- The first dose
- Day one is uneventful for most people. A fatty oil on an empty stomach can sit heavily, which is why it goes with a meal.
- With regular use
- Over weeks it contributes a conjugated fat to your diet and to skin lipids. What that adds up to in people has only been looked at in small studies.
- How well tolerated
- Generally well tolerated as a food oil. Freshness is the practical concern, so ask for the peroxide value. Check with your prescriber if pregnant or breastfeeding.
- How it feels
- No distinct sensation. It's an oil, so the honest experience is swallowing a softgel, with any effect sitting in skin measures and blood fats.
- The overlooked benefit
- The conjugated double bonds that make it interesting also make it oxidise faster than most oils, which is why vitamin E goes in and why freshness matters here.

Why these belong in the same formula. Each row says what the basis is, from settled biochemistry through to a trial that measured the pair.
Punicic acid carries three conjugated double bonds, which makes it markedly more prone to oxidation than a typical unsaturated fat. Alpha tocopherol terminates the radical chain reaction that would otherwise turn the oil rancid in the bottle and generate peroxides in the body. Pomegranate seed oil is normally sold with tocopherol present for exactly this reason.
Rosemary extract supplies carnosic acid and carnosol, which work alongside tocopherol to slow peroxidation in a highly unsaturated oil. Its presence on the label of a conjugated fatty acid product is a stabiliser function. It protects the oil rather than doing anything measurable in the person.
Astaxanthin spans the lipid bilayer and quenches radicals in the membrane phase where polyunsaturated fatty acids sit. Pairing it with an easily oxidised conjugated oil is a coherent protective strategy. The pairing is chemistry led. A head to head test of oxidation markers with punicic acid specifically is not available here.
Punicic acid is converted in mammalian tissue to 9-cis,11-trans conjugated linoleic acid by a reductase step, so a share of what punicic acid does downstream is actually CLA doing it. That makes pomegranate seed oil a delivery route to CLA rather than an independent actor. Combining the two supplies the same endpoint by two paths, which matters when totalling intake.
All polyunsaturated fatty acids compete for the same delta-6 desaturase and elongase machinery. A large linoleic acid load occupies that capacity and shifts how other unsaturated fats are handled. This is the standard omega ratio argument and it applies to any added specialty fatty acid.
Both are polyunsaturated oils absorbed through the same micellar route and processed by the same desaturase and elongase enzymes, so they share capacity rather than reinforcing each other. Stacking them raises the total oxidisable lipid load, which raises the antioxidant requirement. Naming one omega number does not make it a substitute for another.
A medium chain triglyceride base keeps a specialty oil dispersed and stimulates the bile response that any long chain fat needs for micelle formation. It also dilutes a strongly flavoured seed oil to a tolerable taste. The role is delivery, not activity.
Lecithin emulsifies the oil for microencapsulation, which is how a fragile conjugated fat gets into a powder or a stick pack without going rancid. Encapsulation also cuts the odour and aftertaste. The mechanism is formulation chemistry.
Ascorbate regenerates the tocopheroxyl radical back to active tocopherol at the lipid and water interface, which extends how long the vitamin E can keep protecting the oil. This is the classic antioxidant recycling loop. It matters more the more unsaturated the fat is.
Fruit seed polyphenols contribute to the same radical scavenging network that protects unsaturated lipids. Pomegranate products often carry the fruit polyphenols alongside the seed oil for this reason. The combination is plausible chemistry rather than a tested pairing.

Omega-5 just describes where the first double bond sits in the fat's chemical structure, the same kind of naming used for omega-3 and omega-6. It doesn't mean this fat behaves like those better-known ones.
Because of how their double bonds are arranged, conjugated fats like this oxidize more easily than similar fats with a more typical structure.
Myristoleic acid is also technically an omega-5 fat and turns up in dairy fat and some seed oils, so the term covers more than one compound, and it's worth checking the label.
Omega-5 oil is a long chain fat, so your body needs bile acids to package it into tiny droplets before it can absorb it. That's why it's taken with a meal that has some fat in it.
Where Omega-5 comes from.
It is pressed from pomegranate seeds, the hard bits left over after the juice is made. The seeds get dried and squeezed, the oil is filtered and tested for how much punicic acid it holds, then vitamin E goes in because this oil turns rancid faster than most. Ask for the peroxide value if you want to know whether a bottle is fresh.
Made from a plant. What ends up in the capsule tracks the harvest, so batch testing and a stated marker matter more here than with a made molecule.
Seeds separated from juice processing waste and dried to low moisture before pressing. Yield per fruit is small, which is what sets the price.
Mechanical pressing at controlled temperature keeps the conjugated double bonds intact. CO2 extraction achieves higher yield without residual solvent.
Fine solids and phospholipids are removed. Full refining is optional and comes at the cost of the native tocopherol and sterol content.
The oil is assayed to confirm punicic acid percentage and blended to a declared figure, with peroxide value checked as a freshness measure.
Tocopherol and often rosemary extract are added, then the oil is filled into softgels under nitrogen or spray dried into a powder.
