The same chemistry works in the other direction, with calcium reducing the amount of free polyphenol available. Spacing the two apart is the practical answer.
Walnut hull polyphenols and quercetin are both handled by intestinal and hepatic UGT and SULT conjugation, so co-ingestion puts more substrate through a finite conjugating capacity. In practice that can raise the circulating share of unconjugated polyphenol. The relationship is mechanistic and has not been quantified for this pairing.
Grape seed proanthocyanidins are condensed tannins and hull tannins are largely hydrolysable, but both bind dietary protein and both interfere with non-heme mineral uptake. Stacking them raises total tannin load and therefore the astringency and the mineral binding. Formulas carrying several tannin sources should be read as one combined tannin dose.
Bentonite is a layered aluminosilicate with a large charged surface that adsorbs organic molecules non-selectively, including polyphenols and alkaloids. Taken in the same dose as a hull extract it will bind a share of the constituents before they can be absorbed. Products that pair a binder with a botanical usually stagger them for this reason.
Psyllium raises luminal viscosity and speeds transit, both of which reduce contact time between hull constituents and the mucosa. Hydrolysable tannins form dark, poorly absorbed complexes with ferrous and ferric iron; the reaction is the basis of iron-gall ink. Juglone, a 1,4-naphthoquinone, is the characteristic constituent of walnut hull and is what stains skin and fabric brown on contact with air.
Naphthoquinones such as juglone undergo redox cycling, accepting an electron to form a semiquinone that passes it to oxygen and regenerates the quinone; this generates reactive oxygen species in the local environment.
Hydrolysable tannins bind proteins and divalent metal cations in the gut lumen, forming complexes that neither the tannin nor the mineral escapes readily.
Where Black Walnut Hull comes from.
It is the green outer husk of the black walnut, dried and ground or soaked in alcohol. How quickly it was dried after picking changes what ends up in the bottle.
