Green seaweed contributes dietary iodine, and the deiodinase enzymes that convert thyroid hormone into its active form are selenoproteins. Adequate selenium is what lets iodine intake be used normally.
Seaweed is itself an iodine-bearing food, so stacking a separate iodine source adds to the same intake total rather than acting on a different pathway. Formulators count the seaweed contribution before adding standalone iodine.
Thyroid hormone synthesis iodinates tyrosine residues on thyroglobulin, so both iodine and tyrosine are structural inputs to the same molecule. Marine algae contribute iodine to the diet, tyrosine comes from dietary protein. Neither input drives hormone production on its own and neither is limiting in an ordinary diet.
The iron in seaweed is non-haem iron, which is absorbed poorly and is further inhibited by the polyphenols algae carry. Ascorbate reduces ferric to ferrous iron and forms a soluble complex that resists that inhibition. This is a well-characterised absorption interaction rather than an algae-specific finding.
Green macroalgae carry iron, but in a matrix of polyphenols and soluble fibre that lowers the absorbable fraction. Whether an algal meal adds usefully to iron status depends far more on the meal it sits in than on the algae. Iron status is measured by ferritin and haemoglobin, which are laboratory markers.
Marine algae are a source of calcium and magnesium, and divalent cations compete for shared uptake routes when they arrive together in quantity. A large single mineral dose taken with algae is handled less completely than the same amount split across meals. The algal fibre also binds a fraction of any mineral in the lumen.
Seaweeds concentrate magnesium and potassium from seawater, so an algal ingredient contributes to the same mineral pool a magnesium supplement targets. The contribution varies with harvest site, season and how much salt was left after processing. Nothing here supports a specific figure.
Codium is commonly sold salted or brine-preserved, and the salt used for preservation stays with the product unless it is rinsed out. That makes the sodium contribution a processing decision rather than a property of the alga. Rinsing before use is the practical control.
Green algae carry sulfated galactans and other soluble polysaccharides that human enzymes cannot digest, leaving them as substrate for colonic fermentation to short-chain fatty acids including butyrate. Only part of the gut microbiota carries the sulfatases needed, so the extent of fermentation varies between people. Direct butyrate supplements bypass that variability.
Sulfated and neutral algal polysaccharides reach the colon intact and can be fermented by species that carry the right glycoside hydrolases and sulfatases. Pairing them with live organisms follows the standard synbiotic reasoning. Which strains actually use algal polysaccharides is not well mapped.
Activated charcoal adsorbs a wide range of compounds in the gut without selecting between them, including minerals and polyphenols from a seaweed. Co-ingestion reduces what either contributes. Charcoal is generally kept apart from all supplements and medicines for this reason.
Algal antioxidant activity is mostly attributed to water-soluble polyphenols and pigments, which act in a different phase from tocopherols in the membrane. The two ends of the antioxidant network regenerate each other in vitro. Antioxidant assay activity is a laboratory measurement and does not translate directly to a body-level result.
