Why these belong in the same formula. Each row says what the basis is, from settled biochemistry through to a trial that measured the pair.
Ascorbate regenerates oxidised anthocyanin and flavonol species, and the native plum already carries both classes in its matrix. In a liquid format the two react with each other over time, so the pairing holds better in a dry powder.
The anthocyanins and tannins concentrated in this native plum bind ferric iron in the lumen and hold it out of reach of the enterocyte. Taking a non-heme iron dose at the same sitting lowers how much is absorbed.
Ascorbate reduces the tocopheroxyl radical back to alpha-tocopherol, which is how a water-soluble antioxidant keeps a lipid-phase one in circulation. Davidson plum extract is a concentrated food source of ascorbate, so the same chemistry applies when the two are taken together. This is a redox relationship measured in chemical and cell systems, not a clinical outcome.
Dihydrolipoic acid can regenerate ascorbate from its oxidised forms, and ascorbate in turn supports tocopherol recycling. The pairing is described as a recycling network rather than two independent antioxidants. What is measured is redox status, which is a marker.
Prolyl hydroxylase and lysyl hydroxylase require ascorbate to keep their iron centre reduced, so collagen strands cannot be hydroxylated normally without it. Pairing a vitamin C source with collagen peptides supplies substrate and cofactor at the same time. This supports normal connective tissue formation and says nothing about skin appearance outcomes.
Proline is the residue that ascorbate-dependent hydroxylases convert to hydroxyproline during collagen assembly. Supplying proline alongside a vitamin C source covers both the substrate and the cofactor side of that step. The relationship is textbook enzymology, not a trial result.
Lysyl hydroxylase acts on lysine residues in procollagen and depends on ascorbate as a cofactor. A vitamin C rich extract therefore complements lysine in the same synthesis step. Again this is pathway logic, with no clinical endpoint attached.
Ascorbate can reduce the quercetin phenoxyl radical, which slows quercetin's own oxidative loss in solution. Davidson plum extract carries both ascorbate and its own anthocyanin fraction, so a quercetin pairing stacks several phenolic donors. The evidence for this sits in chemical and cell models rather than human endpoints.
Both materials deliver proanthocyanidin and anthocyanin type polyphenols that are handled by the same conjugation and microbial pathways. Combining them raises total polyphenol load rather than adding a distinct mechanism. Effects reported for either are usually antioxidant markers, not measured clinical outcomes.
Davidson plum is unusually rich in anthocyanins for a fruit, and bilberry is the more studied anthocyanin source, so the two overlap in pigment class and metabolic fate. A formulator pairing them is stacking the same chemistry, which matters for dose accounting. No combination study establishes an added effect.
Selenium is built into glutathione peroxidase, the enzyme arm of the same antioxidant network that ascorbate feeds non-enzymatically. The two act at different points rather than duplicating each other. Selenium has a narrow intake range, so total intake from all sources is the thing to watch.
Polyphenol-rich fruit extracts bind divalent cations in the gut lumen, and zinc is among the minerals reported to be affected. Separating a concentrated polyphenol dose from a zinc dose by a couple of hours is the usual formulation answer. The size of the effect from a fruit concentrate specifically has not been quantified.
Fruit acids and phenolic groups form complexes with calcium in solution, which can lower how much free mineral is available for uptake at that meal. This is a timing consideration rather than a reason to avoid either. It is described from in vitro solubility work, not from human balance studies of this fruit.
Ascorbate reduces cupric copper to the cuprous form, which changes both its absorption behaviour and its pro-oxidant potential in vitro. High ascorbate intakes have been discussed in relation to copper status indicators. Indicators are markers and the human relevance at food-level doses is unsettled.
