Where Lac Resin (Shellac) comes from.

Tiny lac insects coat tree branches in a hard resin, and that crust is scraped off, crushed and washed. The washed granules are melted and filtered, or dissolved in alcohol and filtered, to get a clean resin. Some grades then have the natural wax removed or are bleached pale. It arrives at the factory as flakes or as a ready-made solution for coating tablets. Because it comes from an insect, it is not a vegan ingredient.

Lac insects colonise host trees such as kusum, palas and ber, mainly in India and Thailand, and secrete a hard resin over the twigs. The encrusted twigs are cut and the crude resin, called sticklac, is scraped off. It is an insect secretion, which is why the material is not vegan.

Crushing and washing to seedlac

Sticklac is crushed, sieved and washed to remove twig fragments, insect bodies and the water-soluble lac dye. The washed granules are dried, giving seedlac.

Heat filtration or solvent processing

Seedlac is either melted and forced through cloth, the traditional hand-made process that yields sheets and buttons, or dissolved in ethanol and filtered. Heat processing polymerises the resin somewhat. Solvent processing does not, which is one reason the two grades behave differently.

Dewaxing and optional bleaching

Natural wax at around 5 percent is filtered out of the alcoholic solution to make dewaxed grades. Bleaching with hypochlorite produces the pale grade used on light coatings, at the cost of storage stability.
