No study gave these as a pair, so they are not in the card above. But the reason they belong together is settled biochemistry, not a guess, so it is worth knowing.
Salix discolor and Salix alba both carry salicin and related precursors that become salicylic acid by the same steps. Combining them adds salicylate exposure without adding a distinct action. Pussywillow is the less characterised of the two, so the combined total is harder to estimate.
Both are shrub willows whose bark yields salicin. Stacking two Salix barks compounds salicylate delivery from an already variable base. There is no formulation reason to combine them.
Salicin has to lose its sugar before anything happens, and gut bacteria do that job. Someone with a depleted or recently disturbed microbiota converts less of a given bark dose. Whether a specific supplemental strain restores that conversion has not been tested for willow bark.
Salicylate leaves the body mainly as salicyluric acid, formed by conjugation with glycine. The pathway saturates at higher loads, which is why salicylate kinetics stop being linear as dose rises. Adequate glycine is a background requirement rather than a way to enhance the herb.
Salicylate reduces thromboxane through cyclooxygenase while EPA shifts eicosanoid production toward less aggregatory forms. The endpoints overlap, so bleeding time can extend more than with either alone. Relevant mainly around surgery or alongside anticoagulant medicine.
Ginger moves platelet aggregation in the same direction as salicylate, though the size of the effect at ordinary intakes is small. The measurement is a marker of platelet behaviour and not a bleeding outcome. Worth noting before procedures.
The two act at different points of the clotting sequence, nattokinase on fibrin and salicylate on platelets. Combined, the overall picture shifts further than either alone would produce. No study has tested the pairing, so this reasons from each one's known action.
Willow bark carries condensed tannins alongside salicin, and those bind non-heme iron before absorption. Dosing bark with an iron supplement reduces what gets through. Separating them by two hours resolves it.
Ascorbate keeps iron in the ferrous form and competes with tannins for it, recovering some of the bound fraction. The rescue is partial, not complete. Timing separation remains the more dependable approach.
At supplemental doses well above dietary intake, vitamin E lengthens bleeding time in human studies. On top of a salicylate-yielding bark the effects run together. Food-level and multivitamin intakes are not the concern here.
