The characteristic constituent of Embelia ribes is embelin, a 2,5-dihydroxy-3-undecyl-1,4-benzoquinone. The long alkyl chain makes it strongly lipophilic and poorly water soluble, which is why traditional preparations use the whole dried berry and modern ones use a hydroalcoholic extract.
Benzoquinones such as embelin can cycle between quinone and hydroquinone states, accepting and donating electrons. That redox behaviour is the basis of the antioxidant readings reported in cell-free assays and, at higher concentrations, of pro-oxidant behaviour in the same systems.
Because embelin is lipophilic, taking the berry powder or extract with a fat-containing meal raises the absorbed fraction relative to taking it with water alone.
Where Vidanga (Embelia ribes) comes from.
The berries are picked ripe and dried in the sun. From there one route just grinds them into a powder. The other soaks the dried fruit in an alcohol and water mix to pull out embelin, the main active, then dries that down to a stronger powder with a tested strength on the label.
Made from a plant. What ends up in the capsule tracks the harvest, so batch testing and a stated marker matter more here than with a made molecule.
Small berries from a climbing shrub native to India, Sri Lanka and parts of Southeast Asia, largely wild-collected rather than cultivated. Adulteration with berries of related species is a known trade issue, which is why species identity testing matters.
Berries are dried after harvest until the moisture is low enough for storage. Drying darkens the fruit and is the step traditional texts describe.
For the traditional churna the dried berry is simply milled to a fine powder. For an extract, ethanol-water or another organic solvent pulls out the lipophilic embelin fraction.
Solvent is removed under reduced pressure. Where a pure isolate is wanted, embelin is crystallised out of the concentrate.
Concentrates are assayed by HPLC against an embelin reference standard. Whole-berry powder is normally sold without such an assay.
