Medium-chain triglycerides are oxidised in the liver to ketone bodies, so they raise the ketones the body makes while the salt blend supplies ketones directly. The two are formulated together as standard practice.
MCTs bypass the carnitine shuttle and reach the liver by the portal vein, where they are converted to acetoacetate and beta-hydroxybutyrate. That endogenous rise adds to the preformed ketone supplied by the salts.
Carnitine palmitoyltransferase moves long-chain fatty acids into the mitochondrion for beta-oxidation, the acetyl-CoA source for hepatic ketone synthesis. It supports the endogenous side of the same pathway the blend feeds directly.
Leucine breaks down through HMG-CoA to acetoacetate, so it feeds the ketone pool rather than glucose. It adds to the same circulating pool the blend raises.

Beta-hydroxybutyrate is an acid and has to be neutralised to be palatable, so it is sold as mineral salts, magnesium among them. That means the magnesium in a ketone blend is a structural part of the ingredient rather than an added nutrient. Magnesium salts of organic acids also carry an osmotic laxative tendency at higher intakes, which is the practical ceiling on how much of the counterion load can be magnesium.
Ketone salt blends are usually sodium heavy, and a sodium-heavy intake without matching potassium shifts the balance of the two on the plate. Potassium is the intracellular counterpart to extracellular sodium and both are needed for normal fluid balance and normal muscle and nerve signalling. Pairing the two is standard electrolyte practice rather than a ketone-specific finding.
Beta-hydroxybutyrate and nicotinic acid are both ligands at the same receptor, HCAR2, on adipocytes, where activation suppresses lipolysis. Taking both at once means two agonists at one receptor, which is a shared occupancy rather than two separate effects adding up. The receptor biology is established; what the combination does to circulating free fatty acids in a person has not been measured.
The first step of ketone oxidation is beta-hydroxybutyrate dehydrogenase, which needs NAD+ as its electron acceptor, and NAD+ availability sets how fast that step can run. Nicotinamide riboside is an NAD+ precursor that raises whole blood NAD+ in human studies, which is a marker and not an outcome. The cofactor logic is sound; no work has tested whether raising NAD+ changes ketone clearance in people.
Ketone bodies are converted to acetyl-CoA and enter the citric acid cycle, and the reducing equivalents that come out are passed down the electron transport chain, where coenzyme Q10 is the mobile carrier between complexes I and II and complex III. Supplying ketone fuel does nothing without a working chain to oxidise it. This is a pathway relationship, not a demonstrated additive effect of the two supplements.
A large dose of mineral salts pulls water into the gut lumen osmotically, which is why ketone salt servings are commonly taken with generous fluid. Taurine is a cellular osmolyte and appears in many electrolyte and hydration formulas for that reason. The pairing is a hydration-formula convention grounded in osmolyte physiology rather than in any ketone trial.
