Ivy leaf is standardised to a group of soap-like plant molecules, mainly hederacoside C and alpha-hederin.
These molecules have a water-loving end and a fat-loving end, which makes them behave like a mild soap and thin watery films.

Where Ivy Leaf Extract (Hedera helix) comes from.
Ivy leaves are dried, ground and soaked in a water and alcohol mix that pulls out the soapy plant compounds. The liquid is filtered and concentrated, then measured so the label can state how much of the marker compound is in it. From there it is either dried into a powder for capsules or mixed into a syrup.
Made from a plant. What ends up in the capsule tracks the harvest, so batch testing and a stated marker matter more here than with a made molecule.
Leaves of common ivy, an evergreen climber native to Europe and western Asia, are collected from cultivated or managed stands. Saponin content varies with leaf age and season, so harvest timing is part of the specification.
