Leaves of Plantago major or Plantago lanceolata, harvested in the growing season before or during early flowering; much of the commercial supply is wild-collected from meadow and pasture, which is why species mixing occurs.
Leaves are washed, sorted from soil and grass, then dried at low temperature to hold moisture below the point where mould develops; heat and light degrade the phenylethanoid fraction.
