- Suits people building a traditional Chinese herb routine around memory and calm, especially anyone comfortable running a course rather than a forever habit. Human research on it is early.
- How much to take
- Start with 100mg to 300mg a day of a standardised root extract. That is the maintenance band. Take it with food, since the saponins can be sharp on an empty stomach.

Bacopa bacosides and polygala onjisaponins are both triterpene saponins associated with synaptic and neurotrophic signalling. Nootropic blends combine them as complementary saponin-bearing herbs.

In traditional formulation licorice is added to soften the harshness of irritant herbs, and polygala root is one of the herbs it is paired with. Glycyrrhizin is itself a saponin and is surface-active, so the two interact physicochemically in a decoction. Licorice at sustained doses affects mineralocorticoid handling and potassium, which is the practical caution on that side.
Acetyl-L-carnitine supplies acetyl groups that can enter acetyl-CoA and support acetylcholine formation. Polygala root is placed in the same class of formula on traditional and preclinical grounds. Their proposed mechanisms are separate, which is why the two appear together; no combination measurement is behind it.
CDP-choline is hydrolysed to choline and cytidine and feeds both membrane phosphatidylcholine synthesis and acetylcholine production. Polygala is combined with cholinergic precursors in nootropic formulas because it is proposed to act on a different step. The substrate side is established; the combination is not measured.
Phosphatidylserine is a structural phospholipid enriched in neuronal membranes and is supplied as substrate rather than as a signalling agent. Polygala contributes saponins and oligosaccharide esters. The two are combined for non-overlapping reasons and there is no combination trial.
L-theanine is a glutamate analogue from tea associated with a relaxed but alert state. Yuan zhi is traditionally used in formulas aimed at settling the mind at night. Where both are taken with anything else sedating, the calming effects can stack, which is the point worth flagging.
Melatonin shifts circadian timing and lowers sleep latency. Polygala root sits in traditional calming formulas. Combining sedating agents makes daytime drowsiness more likely than either alone, which is the practical consequence rather than a benefit claim.
Valerian is used for sleep onset and polygala appears in the same class of traditional formula. Stacked sedating botanicals raise the chance of morning grogginess. The interaction to state is the additive one, not a claimed benefit.
Jujube seed and polygala root are paired in traditional prescriptions aimed at settling the mind. Both carry saponin fractions, so a decoction of the two is saponin-rich. The basis is documented traditional formulation, not a controlled comparison.
Fu ling is a standard companion to yuan zhi in traditional calming and cognitive prescriptions. It contributes triterpenes and polysaccharides from a fungal sclerotium rather than plant saponins. Long combined use is the whole basis here.
Rhodiola contributes rosavins and salidroside and is used for perceived fatigue during demanding periods. Polygala is placed alongside it in modern nootropic blends. This is contemporary formulation practice with no combination data behind it.
Wu wei zi and yuan zhi appear together in traditional prescriptions. Schisandra lignans also interact with hepatic drug-metabolising enzymes, which is the caution for anyone taking medicines. The basis is long use, not measurement.

The medicinal part of Polygala tenuifolia is the dried root, traditionally with the woody core removed, and it is known in Chinese practice as yuan zhi.
Its characteristic constituents are triterpenoid saponins of the onjisaponin group, oligosaccharide esters such as tenuifoliside and 3,6-disinapoyl sucrose, and xanthones.
Triterpene saponins are surface-active amphiphiles that lower surface tension and can disrupt cell membranes at sufficient concentration, which is the chemical reason saponin-rich roots irritate the gastric and intestinal mucosa.
Saponins foam strongly in water, so a decoction of the root froths; this is a physical property of the constituents and not a sign of adulteration.
Where Polygala (Yuan Zhi) comes from.
The root is dug up, the woody middle is pulled out and the rest is dried. Traditionally it is then boiled with licorice or fried with honey, because the plain root is hard on the stomach. Modern extract versions skip that step and instead measure one marker compound, so a raw root, a honey-processed root and a standardised extract are not the same thing even though the label word is.
Made from a plant. What ends up in the capsule tracks the harvest, so batch testing and a stated marker matter more here than with a made molecule.
A perennial grown mainly in Shanxi, Shaanxi and Inner Mongolia in China, harvested in spring or autumn from plants that are typically two to three years old.
Roots are washed, softened, and the woody central core is pulled out, since the bark-rich outer layer holds most of the saponin content; the remaining root is sun or air dried.
Where a processed grade is made, the dried root is boiled in licorice decoction or stir-fried with honey, both long-standing methods for moderating the irritant saponin fraction.
For extract grades the root is percolated or refluxed with water or aqueous ethanol; saponins and oligosaccharide esters both go into solution.
The extract is filtered, sometimes passed over a macroporous resin to enrich the target fraction, then concentrated under vacuum.
The concentrate is assayed for 3,6-disinapoyl sucrose or total saponins and adjusted with a carrier to reach the declared percentage.
The material ships as cut and processed root for decoction, as a granule, or as a spray-dried extract powder for capsules and tablets.
