Poria, sold as Fu Ling, is the dried sclerotium of the wood-decay fungus Wolfiporia extensa, historically named Poria cocos. A sclerotium is a dense nutrient storage body, not a fruiting body or a mycelial mat, which is why its composition differs from that of mushroom-cap ingredients.

The dominant constituent of the sclerotium is pachyman, a largely linear beta-1,3-glucan that is poorly soluble in water. Low solubility is the reason processors use alkaline extraction, carboxymethylation or enzymatic treatment when a dissolved polysaccharide fraction is wanted.

Beta-1,3-glucans are not hydrolysed by human digestive enzymes because people lack the required glycoside hydrolases, so an ingested glucan fraction passes to the colon where bacterial enzymes can act on it.
