The active fractions of Ganoderma lucidum split into two chemical classes: water-soluble beta-1,3 and beta-1,6 glucans, and ethanol-soluble triterpenes known as ganoderic acids, which carry the bitterness.

Human digestive enzymes cannot hydrolyse beta-1,3 and beta-1,6 glucan linkages, so an oral dose largely passes to the colon where the resident community ferments it.
