Aromatic L-amino acid decarboxylase and glutamate decarboxylase both require pyridoxal 5-phosphate. Without adequate B6 in its active form those conversions run slowly regardless of substrate supply. Two different parts of the plant are sold under this name: the dried fruit, Ziziphus jujuba, and the seed of the sour variety, Ziziphus jujuba var. spinosa, and they carry different marker compounds.
The seed preparation is standardised on jujuboside A and B, dammarane-type triterpene saponins, and on spinosin, a flavone C-glycoside built on an apigenin backbone.
C-glycosides such as spinosin carry a carbon-to-carbon sugar bond that resists ordinary glycosidase cleavage, so they behave differently in the gut from the O-glycosides found in most flavonoid supplements.
Saponins are surface-active molecules, and their soap-like behaviour in water is what makes traditional decoctions of the seed foam when stirred.
Where Ziziphus Jujuba (Sour Date) comes from.
The fruit is dried, the stone cracked open to get the seed, and the seed is boiled or soaked in alcohol and water to pull out the active parts. That liquid is concentrated, tested for how much marker compound it holds, then dried into a powder.
Made from a plant. What ends up in the capsule tracks the harvest, so batch testing and a stated marker matter more here than with a made molecule.
Fruit of Ziziphus jujuba or the sour variety var. spinosa is harvested at ripeness, mainly in northern China.
