Baicalin is the glucuronide of baicalein, and gut bacteria strip the sugar to release the aglycone before absorption. Baicalein is the form that actually crosses the intestinal wall, after which the body reattaches glucuronic acid. Supplying either one lands in the same circulating pool. That conversion step is the single most important fact about how baicalin behaves orally.
Absorption of baicalin depends on gut bacterial beta-glucuronidase carrying out the hydrolysis to baicalein. People differ in how much of that enzyme activity their gut community carries, which is one reason blood levels after the same dose vary between individuals. A live culture shifts the community but no specific strain has been established as the converter for this compound. The dependency itself is settled.
Berberine appears repeatedly alongside baicalin in the co-occurrence literature and the two share classical Chinese formulations. Both are poorly absorbed as given and both are modified by gut bacteria before they reach circulation. That shared dependency means gut community changes move both together. The pairing is mechanistic and traditional rather than tested for a specific outcome.
Baicalein carries a catechol-like arrangement of hydroxyl groups that can be oxidised to a quinone, and glutathione conjugates such quinones through glutathione S-transferase. That conjugation is one of the routes by which the flavone is cleared. Glutathione appears among the compounds most often co-measured with baicalin in the laboratory literature for this reason. The relationship is metabolic chemistry, not an outcome claim.
Ascorbate reduces the phenoxyl radical formed when a flavone donates an electron, returning it to the parent form. That recycling is standard antioxidant network chemistry and applies to baicalein as it does to other polyphenols. It describes behaviour in a chemical system, and it is not by itself evidence of a benefit in people. Antioxidant blends pair the two on this basis.
Quercetin and baicalein are both glucuronidated and sulfated by the same enzyme families, and each inhibits those enzymes somewhat. Taken together they compete for a limited conjugating capacity and exposure to both can run higher than either predicts alone. The size of the shift depends on doses that are not established here. This is shared metabolism, flagged rather than recommended.
Baicalein is cleared rapidly by glucuronidation, which is why plasma levels fall quickly after an oral dose. Piperine inhibits the UGT enzymes that do that work, so co-dosing raises exposure. The same inhibition affects anything else in the stack cleared by the same route. The mechanism is established; the magnitude for baicalin specifically is not stated here.
Baicalein binds iron through its adjacent hydroxyl groups, which is the same chemistry that makes polyphenol-rich drinks lower non-heme iron uptake. Taken in the same sitting as an iron dose, less of that iron is absorbed. Spacing the two apart handles it. This is a described absorption competition and says nothing about anyone's iron status.
Flavones with adjacent hydroxyls form complexes with divalent metals including zinc, not only iron. In practice the effect on zinc uptake is smaller and less well characterised than the iron interaction. Separating a mineral dose from a concentrated polyphenol extract is the simple handling. The confidence is set lower because the human data specific to this pairing is thin.
Curcumin and baicalein are both cleared by extensive first-pass glucuronidation, which is why both are usually paired with an absorption aid. Combining them puts two substrates on the same enzymes. The interaction is pharmacokinetic and its direction is upward exposure for both. No combination outcome is claimed.
Dihydrolipoic acid regenerates other antioxidants including ascorbate and glutathione, which in turn recycle flavonoid radicals. Baicalein sits at the flavonoid end of that chain. The network relationship is chemistry described in redox biology, not a measured clinical result. Blends combine them for network coverage rather than for a single target.
EGCG and baicalein compete for the same conjugating enzymes and both bind dietary non-heme iron. Together they push polyphenol exposure up and mineral uptake at the same meal down. Neither effect is unique to the pair; it is what concentrated polyphenol stacking does. Worth flagging rather than avoiding.
Silymarin flavonolignans are conjugated by the same UGT enzymes that clear baicalein and silymarin inhibits several of them. Stacked together, clearance of each slows. The pairing appears in botanical blends aimed at everyday liver function support. The interaction described here is metabolic and not an outcome.
Resveratrol is cleared almost entirely by sulfation and glucuronidation and it saturates that capacity readily. Baicalein draws on the same enzymes. Co-dosing raises exposure to both compared with either alone. This is well-described polyphenol pharmacokinetics rather than a synergy claim.
Baikal skullcap and licorice appear together in classical multi-herb decoctions. Glycyrrhizin, like baicalin, is a glycoside that gut bacteria must cleave before absorption, so both compounds depend on the same class of microbial step. Licorice at sustained intakes carries its own sodium and potassium considerations. The pairing is traditional with a shared absorption mechanism behind it.

Baicalin is baicalein 7-O-beta-D-glucuronide, a flavone glucuronide that occurs naturally in the root of Scutellaria baicalensis.
Oral baicalin is absorbed poorly in its intact glucuronide form. Gut bacterial beta-glucuronidase hydrolyses it to the aglycone baicalein, which is the species that crosses the intestinal epithelium.
Once absorbed, baicalein is rapidly re-conjugated by UDP-glucuronosyltransferases and sulfotransferases, so most of what circulates after an oral dose is conjugated rather than free aglycone.
The adjacent hydroxyl groups on the baicalein A-ring chelate divalent and trivalent metal ions, which underlies both its metal-binding behaviour in solution and its interference with non-heme mineral absorption in the gut.
Where Baicalin (Chinese Skullcap) comes from.
Almost all baicalin comes from the root of Baikal skullcap. The dried root is soaked in hot water or alcohol, then the liquid is made acidic, which makes the baicalin drop out as a solid. That solid is cleaned up, dried, tested for purity and put into capsules.
Made from a plant. What ends up in the capsule tracks the harvest, so batch testing and a stated marker matter more here than with a made molecule.
Roots are lifted from cultivated plants after two to three growing seasons, when flavone content in the root is at its highest, then washed and dried.
Milled root is extracted with hot water or a hydroalcoholic solvent. Baicalin's glucuronic acid group makes it the most readily water-extracted of the root flavones.
The extract is acidified, which protonates the glucuronic acid carboxyl and drops baicalin out of solution as a crude solid. This is the classical isolation step and the reason baicalin is one of the cheaper isolated flavones.
The crude precipitate is redissolved under mild alkali, decolourised and recrystallised, or run over macroporous adsorption resin, to bring purity to the declared level.
Purity is set by HPLC against a certified baicalin standard. Wogonoside and free baicalein are the usual related-substance peaks.
The purified solid is dried, milled to a consistent particle size and blended with flow aids or a phospholipid carrier before filling.
