Borage seed oil is the densest common source of gamma-linolenic acid at roughly twenty percent of its fatty acids. An isolated GLA dose raises the identical circulating pool.
Both oils deliver gamma-linolenic acid past the rate limiting delta-6-desaturase step, primrose at about nine percent and borage at about twenty. Blending them raises the same substrate.
Black currant oil carries GLA alongside stearidonic acid, so it feeds both the omega-6 and the omega-3 branch downstream of desaturation while borage feeds only the omega-6 side.
GLA elongates to dihomo-gamma-linolenic acid, and some of that is desaturated onward to arachidonic acid. Co-dosing EPA restrains delta-5-desaturase and keeps the pool at DGLA, which is the long standing reason these two are formulated together.
EPA and DHA from fish oil restrain the conversion of DGLA onward to arachidonic acid, which is why GLA oils are rarely given alone. Both also act on normal platelet aggregation, so the effect on ordinary clotting time is additive.
Delta-6-desaturase activity depends on adequate zinc, so zinc status governs how much linoleic acid the body converts to GLA in the first place and how the elongation steps downstream proceed.
GLA has three double bonds and oxidises readily in the capsule and in membranes. Tocopherol is added to borage oil as the standard chain breaking antioxidant.
Delta-6 desaturase, the enzyme that converts linoleic acid to gamma-linolenic acid, depends on adequate B6, zinc and magnesium status to run. Borage oil supplies GLA already made, so it bypasses that step rather than depending on it. The pairing matters for the endogenous route and for the elongation and desaturation steps that come after GLA.
The desaturase and elongase enzymes of the omega-6 pathway are magnesium-dependent, as are the ATP-consuming steps that activate fatty acids to their CoA esters before elongation. Magnesium status therefore sits underneath the conversion of GLA to dihomo-gamma-linolenic acid. This is established enzymology rather than a tested combination.
Linoleic acid is the substrate delta-6 desaturase acts on to make GLA, and the enzyme is shared with the omega-3 side of the pathway. A diet already high in linoleic acid keeps that enzyme occupied, which is one of the reasons preformed GLA behaves differently from more linoleic acid. Substrate competition at a single shared enzyme is settled biochemistry.
Alpha-linolenic acid from flaxseed and linoleic acid compete for the same delta-6 desaturase, and the enzyme prefers the omega-3 substrate. Taking both alongside borage oil means the omega-3 and omega-6 branches are drawing on one shared enzyme. Since borage oil supplies GLA past that step, the competition affects the endogenous route more than the supplemented one.
Dihomo-gamma-linolenic acid, the elongation product of GLA, and the long-chain omega-3 fatty acids compete for the same cyclooxygenase and lipoxygenase enzymes and for the same phospholipid positions in the membrane. Which oxygenated products predominate depends on the ratio supplied. This is well-described membrane and eicosanoid biochemistry; the measured endpoints in the literature are fatty acid and eicosanoid profiles, which are markers.
GLA has three double bonds, which makes borage oil oxidation-prone in the bottle and in the softgel. Mixed tocopherols are the standard chain-breaking antioxidant added to such oils, terminating lipid peroxyl radicals before the chain propagates. The pairing is a stability measure in the product, not a claim about anything happening in the body.
Lecithin is a phospholipid emulsifier used to disperse a polyunsaturated oil in an aqueous or powdered matrix, which is what makes emulsions, powders and beadlets of borage oil possible. It also contributes phosphatidylcholine, the phospholipid class the incoming fatty acids are esterified into. The role here is formulation and delivery.
Ascorbate reduces the tocopheroxyl radical back to tocopherol, regenerating the antioxidant that protects polyunsaturated fatty acids from peroxidation. In the aqueous compartment next to a lipid phase this recycling is the standard explanation for the two working as a pair. It is redox chemistry rather than a demonstrated effect of the combination in a person.
Astaxanthin is a lipid-soluble carotenoid that sits in the same oil phase and the same membrane region as GLA-derived fatty acids, and it needs a lipid vehicle to be absorbed at all. Borage oil can act as that vehicle while the carotenoid contributes to the oil's oxidative stability. The absorption dependence is established for carotenoids generally; the pairing itself has not been measured as a combination.

Borage seed oil is defined by its gamma-linolenic acid content. GLA is an 18-carbon omega-6 fatty acid with three double bonds, the direct product of delta-6 desaturation of linoleic acid, and borage oil carries a larger GLA fraction of its total fatty acids than evening primrose oil, which changes the oil volume needed to deliver a given amount of GLA.
Supplemental GLA enters the pathway downstream of delta-6 desaturase, the step usually considered rate-limiting in the omega-6 sequence. That is the mechanistic reason preformed GLA behaves differently from additional linoleic acid.
GLA does not accumulate as GLA. Elongase adds two carbons to give dihomo-gamma-linolenic acid, DGLA, which is what actually builds up in cell phospholipids after GLA intake.
Borage seeds contain pyrrolizidine alkaloids, which are water-soluble nitrogenous compounds rather than lipids. Because of that solubility difference they partition away from the oil during refining and can be reduced to below detection limits, which is what an alkaloid-free specification on a borage oil certificate refers to.
Where Starflower Oil Borage comes from.
It starts as the seed of borage, a bristly blue-flowered annual grown as a crop. The seed is pressed for its oil, the oil is cleaned up, and then a specific step pulls out the plant's natural pyrrolizidine alkaloids, which works because those compounds dissolve in water and the oil does not. After that the oil is checked for how much GLA it contains, given tocopherols to slow oxidation, and sealed away from air and light. Cold-pressed and refined versions both exist and differ in how much of the seed's own antioxidant they keep.
Made from a plant. What ends up in the capsule tracks the harvest, so batch testing and a stated marker matter more here than with a made molecule.
Seed harvested from cultivated borage, a hairy annual grown as a field crop. Seed shatter at maturity makes harvest timing a real agronomic constraint on yield.
