Magnesium stearate is the boundary lubricant and colloidal silica is the glidant in the same powder blend, so one reduces die wall friction while the other keeps the powder flowing. They are routinely used together because neither controls both flow and ejection on its own.
Microcrystalline cellulose provides the compressible bulk of a tablet and magnesium stearate lubricates it during ejection. Because stearate coats particle surfaces and can slow water uptake, formulators hold it to a low fraction of the cellulose base.
Hypromellose forms the plant-based capsule shell and magnesium stearate keeps the powder fill moving cleanly through the dosing disc. The pairing is standard in vegetarian capsules where gelatin lubricity is absent.
Magnesium stearate is the magnesium salt of stearic acid, usually alongside some palmitic acid depending on the feedstock. Formulators sometimes use free stearic acid as a glidant in the same blend. The two behave differently on the tablet press because the salt is more lipophilic at the particle surface, and this is formulation practice rather than a nutritional interaction.
Because magnesium is one of the two components, a capsule containing this excipient does contribute some elemental magnesium. The amount is small next to the quantity used in a magnesium supplement, since the excipient is present at a fraction of a percent of a formula while a magnesium product is dosed in hundreds of milligrams. It is not a meaningful source of the mineral and should not be counted as one.
Ascorbic acid tablets compress poorly without a die wall lubricant, which is why the two appear on the same label so often. Magnesium stearate reduces ejection force and sticking. This is a manufacturing relationship, not a biological one.
A gram-scale mineral tablet cannot be ejected reliably without lubrication. Magnesium stearate is used at low inclusion because it works at fractions of a percent. The pairing is one of manufacturability, and it says nothing about the mineral's absorption.
