Magnesium stearate is the boundary lubricant and colloidal silica is the glidant in the same powder blend, so one reduces die wall friction while the other keeps the powder flowing. They are routinely used together because neither controls both flow and ejection on its own.
Microcrystalline cellulose provides the compressible bulk of a tablet and magnesium stearate lubricates it during ejection. Because stearate coats particle surfaces and can slow water uptake, formulators hold it to a low fraction of the cellulose base.
