What Bamboo Extract (Silica) actually does.

Bamboo is a silicon accumulator: the plant takes up silicon as orthosilicic acid from soil water and deposits it in the culm and leaves as amorphous hydrated silica bodies, or phytoliths, which is why bamboo material can reach a silica content far above most plants.

Only monomeric orthosilicic acid is absorbed from the gut. Polymerised or particulate silica has to depolymerise to the monomer first, so the physical state of the silica in a supplement governs how much silicon can be taken up at all.

Absorbed silicon is not appreciably metabolised. It circulates largely as undissociated orthosilicic acid, is not protein-bound to a significant degree, and is cleared by the kidney into urine, which is why urinary silicon is the usual absorption marker.

Where Bamboo Extract (Silica) comes from.

Bamboo pulls silicon out of the soil and stores it in its stem as a glassy mineral. Manufacturers mill the dried stem, extract that mineral fraction and dry it into a powder, usually sold at around seventy percent silica. Worth knowing: the percentage on the label is how much silica is in there in total, not how much your gut can take up, because the body only absorbs the small dissolved form.

Made from a plant. What ends up in the capsule tracks the harvest, so batch testing and a stated marker matter more here than with a made molecule.
