The characteristic constituent of Nepeta cataria is nepetalactone, an iridoid monoterpene lactone that exists as several stereoisomers and is volatile enough to be carried over by steam distillation.
Because the active fraction is volatile, high heat and long open-air drying reduce it, which is why the aerial parts are dried at low temperature and stored closed.
The well-known behavioural response of cats to catnip is triggered by nepetalactone acting on the feline olfactory and vomeronasal system; this is a species-specific response in cats and does not transfer to people.
Nepetalactone is built through the iridoid branch of the monoterpene pathway, from geraniol by way of 8-hydroxygeraniol and iridodial, which is why the compound class it belongs to is shared with valerian's valepotriates.
Where Catnip (Nepeta cataria) comes from.
The leaves and flowers are cut when the plant is in bloom and dried gently, because the part that gives catnip its smell evaporates in heat. From there it is either packed as tea, soaked in alcohol and water to make a tincture, or steam-distilled to pull out the oil.
