Cat's claw is the inner bark and root bark of Uncaria tomentosa, a woody vine of the Rubiaceae family native to the Amazon basin; Uncaria guianensis is a separate species sold under the same common name with a different alkaloid profile.
Its characteristic constituents are pentacyclic oxindole alkaloids, including isopteropodine, pteropodine, mitraphylline and isomitraphylline, alongside tetracyclic oxindole alkaloids such as rhynchophylline and isorhynchophylline.
Two distinct chemotypes exist within the same species, one dominated by pentacyclic oxindole alkaloids and one by tetracyclic alkaloids, which is why extracts are characterised by chemotype and not by botanical identity alone.
The bark also carries quinovic acid glycosides, condensed tannins and proanthocyanidins, plus sterols and polyphenolic acids; the tannin fraction is what drives the mineral-binding behaviour of the whole extract.
