Eleutherococcus senticosus root is characterised chemically by eleutherosides, a mixed group that includes the phenylpropanoid syringin (eleutheroside B) and the lignan syringaresinol diglucoside (eleutheroside E); commercial extracts are usually standardised to the sum of B and E.

The plant is in the Araliaceae family alongside Panax ginseng but contains no ginsenosides, which is why the older name Siberian ginseng misleads on chemistry and why labels increasingly use eleuthero instead.
