The roots of the Coleus plant are dried, milled and washed with a solvent that pulls out the forskolin. The liquid is concentrated, the solvent removed, and the powder is adjusted until testing shows the percentage on the label. Researchers have also built the pathway into bacteria so it can be grown rather than farmed.
