How it feels
Aromatic and slightly warming, close to thyme or oregano. The tea is pleasant, and the encapsulated oil can repeat on you as a herbal note afterwards.
The overlooked benefit
A Monarda tea and a Monarda oil are not the same product. Steam distillation leaves rosmarinic acid behind, so the water extract carries polyphenols the oil never had.

Monarda didyma essential oil is dominated by phenolic monoterpenes, principally thymol and carvacrol, alongside their biosynthetic relatives p-cymene and gamma-terpinene. Chemotype varies considerably between populations of the plant.

Thymol and carvacrol are lipophilic phenols that partition into lipid bilayers and increase membrane permeability. This is the standard mechanistic account of their antimicrobial behaviour in vitro and it is not a human clinical finding.

Steam distillation captures only the volatile fraction of the plant. A tea, a hydroethanolic extract and an essential oil from the same Monarda material are chemically different products and are not interchangeable by weight.

Undiluted phenolic essential oils are irritant to skin and mucosa at full strength, which is why they are supplied in a carrier oil or an enteric capsule rather than neat.

Where Monarda Didyma comes from.

Bee balm is cut when it flowers and then either steamed so the fragrant oil rises and is collected, or soaked in alcohol and water to pull out the non-fragrant compounds too. The oil is tested to see how much thymol and carvacrol it holds, then diluted or capsuled.
